For my taste, Glyndebourne 2006 new production of Cosi fan tutte is the best DVD version for this opera. Ivan Fisher is an excellent Mozartian, and the young and good-looking cast sings and acts with a lot of enthusiasm. The best singers are the wonderful Swedish Miah Persson as Fiordiligi, and the Italian baritone Luca Pisaroni as Guglielmo. Highly recommended!!

Veggie Tales: Lessons from the Sock Drawer (2008)

According to the bigidea web site, this DVD contains a lot of previously-released material. The following paragraph is copied from their site:
Short Features Include: Binky the Opera Singer, Going Up, Larry's Blues, Dr. Jiggle & Mr. Sly, Paco and the Singing Aardvark, Omelet, Gated Community, The Englishman Who Went Up The Hill, Larry's Lagoon, Paco and the Chicken, Modern Major General, Forgive-O-Matic, Lunch (A Parable), The Story of St. Patrick, Larry's High Silk Hat
Now of those, there are only three I'm not sure I've already seen (Binky and the Opera Singer -- although that may have been the 10-second clip on "Autotainment" -- and the two Paco shorts). The rest I'm certain I've seen on other VeggieTales DVDs. So if you've seen the entire collection, this is going to be mostly, if not entirely, repeats.
That said, a repeat of a VeggieTale is still better than 90% of what's out there on television or on the sales racks today, but it's difficult to justify the cost if you actually own all these shorts already. So, take a close look before you buy.

I was actually fortunate enough to be in Italy while Eros was on tour. I was able to attend one of his concerts in Catanzaro, Calabria. The concert was PHENOMENAL!!! I never wanted it to end. When i purchased this DVD, it made me feel like i was right there again, only closer. Eros is an amazing musician and an excellent performer! If you don't understand Italian, I would recommend trying to translate his lyrics online, because his concert is incredible, but it's just that much better if you are able to understand the story behind his magic, especially the songs he sings to his daughter Aurora. Ti Amo EROS!

Rosalinda (2000) Review

Rosalinda (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here comes a bit a plot-spoiler, so please be advised:
The story is that 20 years before, Rosalinda's mother, Soledad, is imprisoned for a crime she did not commit, the murder of José Fernando Altamirano. In jail, she gives her daughter over to her sister and asks that she never tells anyone. So Rosalinda grows up not knowing that her mother is in reality her aunt. Rosalinda has two sisters (cousins), Fedra and Lucy, and a brother (Cousin) Beto.
Rosalinda works in a flower shop. One day she is delivering flowers to a restaurant where she meets Fernando José ---- the son of the guy her mother is in prison for murdering!
Rosalinda's mother (aunt) dies and her real mother comes out of prison. She poses as aunt Marta. That is when the problems begin.
The villain of the story is Valeria, Fernando José's stepmother, who will tell him that Marta is actually Soledad. So Fernando José leaves Rosalinda and Valeria steals Rosalinda's baby, and Rosalinda goes crazy.... She is sent to a hospital, that later burns down. Everyone believes her dead, but instead she is now living as Paloma Dorantes, who becomes a singer.
Well, as you see the plot is all you can expect of a telenovela.
The acting by Fernando Carrillo (Fernando José) is terrible, but Thalia isn't that bad in this one. Nora Salinas is convincing as Fedra, Rosalinda's cousin and a villain of the story.
I also noticed there is no singing at all, even though Rosalinda becomes a singer. And the song "Ay Amor!" (Rosalinda)
is missing all together. The additional material is nothing almost, just a short video in which Thalia lip-synchs the song and a "Best Kisses" special (which I didn't watch).
All together, I give it three stars. If you like telenovelas in DVD, Rosalinda is an okay one.
It is 550 minutes long and it has an English subtitle option.
Rosalinda comes in two DVDs, both two-sided and is divided into 16 chapters.

I've watched this DVD many times, and each time I discover a new awesome fact about Christina. Christina talks to you about her life, narrating the 84 min. video, and just gives you the feeling you really know her. This is very informative. It includes music videos for "Genie in a Bottle," "The Christmas Song," and "What a Girl Wants." Plus it shows her rehearsing in a studio, her and dancers hanging around, and who she is when she isn't performing. Many little home videos in it, too. This is defintly a must-see for everyone. Worth the money, it is terrific!

Lou Grant (1977) Review

Lou Grant (1977)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before "Hill Street Blues" and "St. Elsewhere" was the newspaper drama "Lou Grant," an Emmy award-winning show that was one of the most intelligent on television. The writing was consistently high, as was the acting. The whole cast from Ed Asner on down was terrific. (Fans of "The Sopranos" might enjoy seeing Nancy Marchand, who played Tony's mother, as newspaper owner Mrs. Pynchon.)
The show tackled tough subjects, like privacy issues, child abuse, survivalists (in an episode starring Ed Harris). It ran from 1977 to 1982, and without it, later quality MTM dramas like 'Hill Street' and "St. Elsewhere" wouldn't have happened. Sadly, only three videos were released of the series; with so many bad TV series getting the DVD treatment, let's hope this gets the release it deserves.

Bobby (Widescreen Edtion) (2006) Review

Bobby (Widescreen Edtion) (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Robert F. Kennedy was adored by the masses when he won the primary for the Democratic party, on his way to becoming the president. Then, like his presidential brother, he was gunned down in public. (That was WAY before I was born, so much of what I know comes from books)
Emilio Estevez doesn't exactly focus on that in "Bobby." Instead, he creates an elaborate "Grand Hotel"-style plot, focusing on the people who surrounded Kennedy on the last day of his life. The movie is a little scattered throughout the first parts, but Estevez yanks it together in time for the inevitable, tragic denouement.
The entire movie takes place on one day: June 4, 1968. The place: Los Angeles' Ambassador Hotel. And there's as much drama out of the campaign as in it: For example, the manager (William H. Macy) is cheating on his smart beautician wife (Sharon Stone) with the switchboard girl (Heather Graham), but takes some time out to fire a racist supervisor (Christian Slater) because the guy won't let the black and Latin employees vote.
The doorman (Anthony Hopkins) and his pal (Harry Belafonte) play chess and talk. A lounge singer (Demi Moore) is struggling with alcoholism, a young girl (Lindsay Lohan) is marrying a guy she doesn't love (Elijah Wood) to keep him from going to Vietnam, and campaign workers drop acid. Their stories are only loosely intwertwined -- until Sirhan Sirhan arrives.
Estevez has created a movie that Tries To Have It All. It tackles racism, war, love, voting, women's rights, and the adored icons of an era. It also stars just about every kind of actor: veterans, Bratpackers, ex-sexpots, MTV stars, party girls and accomplished young actors.
In fact, "Bobby" spills over with plot and characters, and for the first two thirds, it seems that there is almost too much of EVERYTHING. But Estevez captures the you-are-there ambience, with crisp suits and longer dresses, neat hair, period music and the occasional baseball reference. For a day, you ARE in Los Angeles in 1968.
And he has a knack for creating a sense of foreboding and sadness, which hangs independently of the characters. Yet in some scenes where Kennedy is supposed to be speaking, the shining eagerness that you see in the audience's faces is enough to bowl you over. It captures the hope that was present during that era, and afterwards died quickly, as hope usually does.
The enormous cast makes it hard to single out one, but there are several good ones: Laurence Fishborne and Freddy Rodriguez as cooks who discuss the racism they struggle with, Macy as the manager who struggles to regain his lost youth by an affair, Stone as his faded beauty of a wife, and Wood's bittersweet, ironic portrayal of the young groom.
Kennedy himself is a nebulous figure -- most of what we see are archival clips, which show the young candidate's charisma and power. Although "Bobby's" take on him is rather naive, it does leave you wondering how he might have changed the US, had he lived.
"Bobby" is high on ambition, and Estevez manages to create a truly poignant, thought-provoking film. It has its flaws, but it also captures a shocking moment in American history.

(Drama) A re-telling of the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in 1968. The film follows 22 individuals who are all at the hotel for different purposes but share the common thread of anticipating Kennedy's arrival at the primary election night party, which would change their lives forever. This historic night is set against the backdrop of the cultural issues gripping the country at the time, including racism, sexual inequality and class differences.

Live In Dresden: The Wedding at the Opera (2009) Review

Live In Dresden: The Wedding at the Opera (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After seeing André Rieu's "Live in Vienna" and thinking "it doesn't get any better than this, the World Music King pulls another one out of his hat! . It was not just excellent music - it was excellent entertainment - especially in the "Figaro" aria, where, by weaving in the comical "barber chair" segment, he turned what for some "modernists" was too "dated" a piece into an entertainment delight. Besides the orchestra doing their usual excellent job, the singers - both male and female - were superb, with the Platin Tenors's rendition of "E Lucevan le Stelle" perhaps the best that I have ever heard.
The whole program flowed seamlessly from start to finish, with the two themes (marriage and opera) combined cleverly and tastefully throughout the show; and nothing could have been a better backdrop for such than Dresden's beautiful Semperoperhaus. The mix of tunes, the costumery, and André's witty commentary made for a perfect blend; there wasn't a tedious moment in the whole program. I would recommend this DVD for not just for "André-philes" but for ANYONE.

Verdi: Nabucco (2002) Review

Verdi: Nabucco (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Met production of Verdi's "Nabucco" finds that dear old "Metropolitan Institution" at the top of its form delivering a wonderfully exciting operatic production; one that is filled with HUGE sets and brilliant colors. This stage production has some astounding visuals including massive staircases, columns (on a revolving stage) and giant statues (idols) plus at one point half the stage is set on fire. Added to all of the aforesaid there is some wonderful singing from a superlative cast as well as marvelous and heartfelt singing from the chorus. The orchestra, under Levine, (as expected) plays marvelously. Levine keeps the proceedings moving along very well. I was never made aware that Nabucco is rather immature Verdi.
Having followed Samuel Ramey's career from his very early days, I was somewhat saddened, at first, to hear and to see him sounding and looking rather old realizing that indeed time had slipped away. However, once his voice warmed up and he discarded some unflattering costumes, he sounded and looked as if not too much time had gone away delivering his usual sonorous bass tones.
Juan Pons has never been a particular favorite of mine; however his singing of Nabucco is awe inspiring portraying the character believably while delivering a full rich sound. After all, there aren't too many of the heroic Verdian Baritones hanging around opera houses' stage doors these days! So I was very impressed with Juan!
A fearless Maria Guleghina tackles that voice-killer role of Abigaille with much nerve and sings it very well. She displays no trills and not the greatest floritura; however, she lets fly with many astounding high C's at one moment then plummeting into the lower depths the next-brava! I guess we really can't have everything in this role for it is really impossible to sing well. (Callas dropped it early in her zenith later advising Caballe not to even think of singing it)
Gwyn Hoghes-Jones as Ismaele and Wendy White as Fenena are also very good displaying rich full voices.
If you want to see and hear opera at its most exciting do not hesitate to buy this DVD. (By the way, the picture and sound qualities are great!)

Having been a fan of Scott Michaels' website for a few years, I was delighted when he released this DVD.Living in the UK, I went online, ordered and waited with baited breath until it dropped through my mailbox. Was it worth the wait? The answer is a most definate, YES!
Packed with fascinating insights into not only the deaths of the Stars but of their lives too, this is a delicious drive through the rich and famous from where they liked to hang out to where they died. Listening to the commentary, you can tell that not only does Mr Micheals loves what he does but that as he puts it.. "Gets it"
We see inside famous death scenes, hear what the autopsy report has to say and then see the death certificate.Be outraged as we hear about The Ambassador Hotel and see what became of this beautiful, historic building. Chuckle as you listen to Scott's opinions as we visit the Bat Cave and view the Hollywood sign (as you've never seen it)
For me, the segment where you see Marilyn Monroe's house, just to glimpse that famous window to her bedroom is worth the price of this DVD alone.
I could sit here and rave on and on about this DVD but instead I will say this: If you want a hugely entertaining, funny, clever and very well crafted afternoons viewing that you will never tire of watching then buy this DVD now. Hopefully Volume two will be released soon, in the mean time I will have to settle for this viewing. Don't delay....

Johnny Cash at Town Hall Party (2010)
Average Reviews:

This is a 1958 kinescope (thus, the video quality is OK at best) of a local L.A. area TV show hosted by a young Jay Stewart (who became Monty Hall's sidekick on "Let's Make A Deal"). Johnny Cash sings a multitude of his early hits and the audio quality is fairly good. What makes this DVD so enjoyable is the clear star quality of Johnny Cash even at this early stage in his career (he had just made the jump from Sun Records to Columbia at this time). The numerous camera close-ups are terrific as Johnny Cash explodes on the stage. If you saw "I Walk the Line" movie, you will thoroughly enjoy this DVD...it's the real thing.

Family Ties - The Complete First Season (1982)

Paramount has totally let true fans of classic television down with this much-anticipated release. Due to music issues, a handful of episodes (4 or so) have some original broadcast scenes deleted! This is completely unacceptable. They could have changed the music (which is bad enough in my opinion), but to delete the scene entirely is ridiculous! As much as I loved this show, I can't bring myself to support this set.
To add insult to injury, they still used the word "complete" on the cover! I've noticed in some upcoming Paramount releases that this word is suddenly missing. Check out the cover art for "Happy Days" Season Two and "Wings" Season Four. This leads us to wonder, are these shows truly complete, or will they suffer a fate similar to that of "Family Ties"?
As much as I've always despised music alterations, I've still bought DVD sets that used that tactic since the shows otherwise contained all of the original broadcast footage. But I will NOT buy a set that just hacks away at the episodes like this. If we do support these products, the studios will just keep getting lazier and lazier. Why should they care about putting work into their releases if the public will still gobble up whatever garbage they put out?
I really hate this, because I was looking SO forward to finally owning what I thought was going to be the complete and uncut version of each episode. I guess I should have known better than to count my chickens before they hatched.

This video would be worth the money if only for the inclusion of that legendary performance of "Fine And Mellow" for the Sound Of Jazz t.v. special -- probably THE most transcendent moment in music history! The commentary by Milt Gabler during this scene ("They were all champions . . . and SHE was a champion!") and by Billie's former colleagues and admirers throughout this video are distinguished by their intelligence and warmth. For example, the precious and aged Buck Clayton describing his trumpeting behind Billie as simply "filling up the windows". And the insights of the late, great and utterly dignified Carmen McRae are particularly invaluable. I cried more than a few times watching this beautiful documentary and recommend it highly. It's all we have on Billie, and God knows how we need her.
