Kylie Minogue - Live in Sydney (2001)

Thank God for Kylie Minogue.
When compared to the recent DVD/cable television extravaganzas mounted by Madonna, Janet Jackson and Britney Spears, the Aussie powerhouse emerges as the clear winner. Madonna looks so deadly serious onstage, the effect is not unlike watching a storm trooper in drag going through rather fey combat moves. Janet is only slightly more animated, and can barely manage to keep her breath as she attempts to sing live to her synchronized dance moves. Britney...well, give the girl time. However, the almost complete lack of live vocals (except on the ballads--where the full extent of her producers' talents are plainly [and painfully] audible) is inexcusable.
Kylie, on the other hand, sings live for her entire, exhilirating, nearly 2 hour show, and sings WELL--it can't be easy to maintain your breath control while bouncing around in six-inch kitten heels, yet the diminuative diva manages to carry it off brilliantly. She also is having FUN onstage, and that sense of joy and carefree exuberance carries over to the audience.
The main strength in the Minogue camp (emphasis on "camp") is Kylie's refusal to take herself, or her stardom, too seriously. Oh, there's no doubting that Kylie is a true, blazing, God-given Star; she has charisma, talent, beauty and charm to spare. But her genuine niceness, not to mention her fondness for keeping her tongue firmly in cheek, are breaths of fresh air when confronted with "serious artists" like Madonna, or assembly-line, mass-market popsters like Britney.
From the 1940's-musical-style opener ("Love Boat") to the kitschily fabulous encore ("Spinning Around"), Kylie's energy level never drops once. Highlights abound: a bright, spangly rendition of her 1989 classic "Hand on Your Heart"; a full-steam-ahead Greatest Hits medley that has the audience practically panting at her feet; a brilliant, twisted-cabaret arrangement of her anthem, "Better the Devil You Know"; an unbelievably erotic take on the Olivia Newton-John ditty, "Physical"; a pumping, sexually-charged "Butterfly"; and the aforementioned "Spinning Around" finale.
Another key to Kylie's success: despite her bare midriffs, low-rise leather jeans, tush-grazing hot pants and stilleto heels, she never comes across as sleazy or even overtly sexual; she really may just be the most gosh-darndest nice pop star on the planet (and it's evident that her dancers and band adore her), as well as the most non-threatening.
The DVD comes with some nice extras: backstage peeks at the show, which highlight the cheeky humor of both Kylie herself, and her tour crew. It makes sense: to put on such a lighthearted, fun show, you need to surround yourself with lighthearted, fun people.
This is, without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable contemporary pop concerts available. Buy it! Kylie delivers.

Louis Prima - The Wildest (1999) Review

Louis Prima - The Wildest (1999)
Average Reviews:

This is a nice bio of one of the legends of Las Vegas and beyond. Louis' life is explored from his family's immigration on through to his death in the late 70s. There are many insightful moments represented here thanks to interviews with music historian Will Friedwald, Prima's bandmates Sam Butera, Keely Smith, Gia Maione and others as well as members of Prima's family. Overall it's a nice production but I wish there could have been more concert footage where instead a song like "Just a Gigolo" is played over stock footage of the Vegas strip and people gambling in casinos. What concert footage there is though, is priceless with Louis, Keely and Sam hamming it up for "Just a Gigolo" and "That Old Black Magic" as well as a duet with Gia Maione on "I Want You" that is one of this video's highlights. The main problem with the video is that it leaves you wanting more. Much more.

Before Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Tony Bennett or Engelbert Humperdinck ever played the stages of Vegas, there was Louis Prima. One of America's most hypnotic and original performers, Prima's career spanned several decades and turned out hits like "That Old Black Magic," "Sing, Sing, Sing," "Just a Gigolo," "I Ain't Got Nobody" and "Jump, Jive an' Wail." In Disney's animated classic "The Jungle Book," Prima created the "hep" voice of King Louie the orangutan. This film profiles the magnetic Louis Prima in a nostalgic historical journey through the music scenes of a racy New Orleans, the swinging jazz culture of uptown New York and Las Vegas's "formative" years. As a solo act or with his wife, acclaimed singer Keely Smith, Louis Prima was and will forever be the "wildest" man in show business! Additional interviews; Full-length performances of "Basin Street Blues," "Oh, Babe!" and "Waitin' on the Robert E. Lee;" Audio-only bonus songs: "Sing, Sing, Sing," "Robin Hood" and "Please No Squeeza Da Banana"

Eric Clapton - Live in Hyde Park (1997) Review

Eric Clapton - Live in Hyde Park (1997)
Average Reviews:

This is Eric Clapton at his best. EC has not played with this much fire and intensity since the 70's, including his Derek And The Domino's days. His guitar playing is absolutely FEROCIOUS...which probably shouldn't come as a big surprise, as this concert took place during his 'Back To The Cradle' period, his most convincing and inspired studio album in ages.
The sound quality on this DVD is superb. As it should be, because the incredible TONES Clapton coaxes out of his guitar and amp are that which most guitar players would kill for.
The image quality is also outstanding, very clear and sharp. The camera work is great, with LOTS of closeups of EC and his guitar during the solos, which is an added treat for guitar junkies (myself included.)
For my money, this is the BEST Eric Clapton concert film available. If you're an Eric Clapton fan, this DVD is the one to get.
(NOTE: The DVD edition contains two songs not included on the VHS version: smoldering renditions of "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "It Hurts Me Too".)
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Chris Isaak: The Best of Chris Isaak (2006) Review

Chris Isaak: The Best of Chris Isaak (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased and reviewed the CD / DVD combo set, but since the DVD can be bought alone, I will review it here to help those considering it. Thinking about it? Get it!
This DVD is very well done. Technically, it is basic 2.0 stereo, which was a bit of a let down in a world of 5.1 surround sound, but this is not a limitation. I played the disc in 2.0 through just two speakers and it sounded pretty good. I then set my receiver to Dolby Pro-Logic II, and the sound got even better. It might not be true 5.1, but the music engulfed me and was very balanced from all six of the speakers. In short, as I said, the rendering is not a limitation for listening enjoyment. The visuals are clear and sharp. The navigation is well thought out and intuitive.
One very unusual thing for a music DVD is the inclusion of the artist's commentary for each song. I thought this might be some ego driven thing, but no. Chris Isaak is very funny. He has a dry, self-depreciating style of humor that is devoid of ego. The music alone is great, but the commentary is also terrific. Besides the commentary during the songs, also check out the "preamble", where Isaak very cleverly makes light of the production value. While watching very low tech pencil drawings of Isaak and his band in the studio, hear Issak's voice saying, "we were going to use film, and then hand puppets, then they gave me this pencil." And his request to the viewer about to watch the videos which span many years, "While watching the videos, see if you can see when in out career we became bitter." Funny stuff in the context of the visual.
The bottom line, this is a fine "get to know Chris Isaak" disc for the uninitiated, and for fans, a chance to hear and watch the music from this talented group. You might also find, as I have, that he is also a very funny guy.

Glenn Tilbrook - One for the Road (2005) Review

Glenn Tilbrook - One for the Road (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ever wondered what it would be like to go on a cross-country tour with a rock star? Well, I did and I made a film about it. Expecting luxury tour buses and five-star hotels, I found Glenn Tilbrook, the former lead singer of Squeeze, touring in a mobile home and bedding down in roadside campgrounds.
This intimate film follows Tilbrook on every step of his first solo tour of America in his beloved-but not so reliable-home on wheels. From the search for his missing RV; adventures in engine repair and exploding generators, to a musical house call that one fan will never forget: All access, all of the time.
It's the story of how an established artist adjusts to his independent surroundings. It's a commentary on the current state of the music induestry. But, most importantly, it's a human-interest story that transcends its musical base. Includes exclusive live acoustic performances of Tempted, Hourglass, Take Me I'm Yours, Up The Junction, Pulling Mussels (From the Shell), Goodbye Girl, Another Nail in My Heart, Is That Love, Black Coffee in Bed, Parallel World, This Is Where You Ain't and Some Fantastic Place.

SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE:
*A never before seen interview with Squeeze lyricist Chris Difford from 2002
*My 1991 public access cable interview with Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook from my music video show in Dayton, Ohio
*Audio commentary by Glenn Tilbrook
*Glenn's Q&A from the Tokyo screening of the film and more!!
"A very funny, unique travelogue that stays with you long after the credits roll." Ian Gittins/Q Magazine
"Glenn is the antithesis of Spinal Tap rock delusion and in this film, he comes across as the hardcore troubadour who loves what he does." Peter Curran/BBC
"Glenn is a great artist. He's had a stellar career and would have one in journalism if he were so inclined. I love him. You will too." Randy Newman
"When I first met Glenn, I thought he could write songs like Brian Wilson and play guitar like Jimi Hendrix. I knew he was going to go places and with this DVD he has!" Jools Holland/BBC

This recorded live 1997 Canadian concert includes some of Anne Murray's big hits, including Snowbird, You Needed Me and Danny's Song. I especially liked the Croonin' Medley, with ballads from the 1950s, etc. Besides Anne, viewers get to enjoy performances by Jann Arden, Bryan Adams and Celine Dion. An important highlight are the edited (short) interview segments, allowing Anne talk about her family, herself and aspects of her career.

Sarah McLachlan: Video Collection 1989-1998 (2000) Review

Sarah McLachlan: Video Collection 1989-1998 (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Sarah McLachlan: Video Collection 1989-1998" was my first DVD. I received it as a present from a friend who shared my passion for Sarah McLachlan's music and artistic vision.
The DVD features fifteen music videos spanning all four of Sarah's studio albums (Touch, Solace, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing). The earliest, Vox, dates from 1988 and we see then-20-year-old Sarah as fresh-faced and angelic. The directorial tastes of some of the earlier videos are questionably cheesy, with Vox (Canadian version) being one of the most New Wave-stuck in the '80s mode. The picture quality is generally very sharp, with crisp blacks and vibrant colours. It is a pleasure to see Sarah's maturation as an artist and the directions that her music would take.
One of my favourite videos is "Steaming," a pseudo-film noir club scene reminiscent of Anita Kelsey's songs in the sci-fi film "Dark City." Sarah is a lounge singer, a temptress, with ardent eyes and gloved hands caressing the old-fashioned stand microphone. Her burning gaze bores a hole into you as the story in the video acts itself out.
Other notable videos include "Drawn to the Rhythm," a Loreena McKennittesque video full of surreal images and shot in black and white. The simple, haunting beauty of Sarah's voice and acoustic guitar combined with the wavelike rhythm and images of the ocean make this one tread on New Age/Celtic territory à la McKennitt and Kate Price.
"Possession" is full of muddled religious imagery: Adam and Eve, the severed head of John the Baptist, an actor portraying Christ, as well as blends of pagan imagery (witches/seductress).
"Into the Fire" is a very catchy song with a rather creepy video: naked, mud-coated Sarah rolling around in mud and soggy leaves. Ick. I felt grimy just watching it!
The last few videos from Surfacing really show Sarah's new image and darker songs. "Building a Mystery" features a mysterious man collecting stars and lights and sewing them onto a skirt (this is the top picture on the DVD case), and slipping into a crawl space that Sarah follows him into. "Sweet Surrender" is a bit more disturbing: a victim of a hit-and-run or an accident, apparently dead, mimes along to the music. The body mysteriously moves from the middle of the road, where we see it hit by a car, to the backseat of said car, then is carried into a house and placed on a chesterfield. Sarah and the "body" duet and mimick each other's actions. "Adia" is a neat study in still photography.
This is the perfect gift for that Sarah McLachlan fan. Lots of fun even the third and fourth time through. The variety of musical styles and directorial choices in the various videos make this a pleasure to come back to again and again! I can't wait until Sarah McLachlan's new album comes out..it's been five years since Surfacing. Work on the new CD was suspended for six months due to the severe illness of Sarah McLachlan's mother and Sarah's pregnancy (Sarah gave birth to daughter India on April 6, 2002. Congratulations Sarah and Ashwin!). There's a 75% chance that it will be released sometime in 2002, with the single being released an unheard-of 16 weeks in advance.
Here is the tracklisting for "Sarah McLachlan: Video Collection 1989-1998":
1. Vox (Canadian Version) 2. Steaming 3. Ben's Song 4. Vox (US Version) 5. The Path of Thorns (Terms) 6. Into the Fire 7. Drawn to the Earth 8. Possession (Canadian Version) 9. Hold On 10. Good Enough 11. Possession (US Version) 12. I Will Remember You 13. Building a Mystery 14. Sweet Surrender 15. Adia

Sarah Brightman - Live from Las Vegas (2004) Review

Sarah Brightman - Live from Las Vegas (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before my actual review is even to begin, I feel compelled to dispel nonsense about Sarah's supposed lip-synching. She doesn't. I made a road trip when she visited the west coast and saw three of her shows consecutively. If she lip-synchs, she must record a new track every night because each show was different. These allegations come about because sometimes, her lips don't synch perfectly with the singing. You'll notice that these instances occur almost always with close-up shots. The reason for this is this: Her concerts are recorded twice. She goes through the entire show without an audience so the director can get some nice close-up shots, then she does it for real in front of a live audience. The reasoning for this method is quite simple. To get the type of close-ups desired, the camera would be parked up on a crane with a film crew surrounding it right in front of the artist. A paying audience would riot if cameramen and stagehands were right there on stage hovering around Sarah. I know this isn't what people really want to know, but the editors have done an absolutely fantastic job putting the show together in a way that is totally seamless. It really is Sarah singing live, and while the method isn't what people want (I know we all want a DVD that shows footage only from the live audience show), but it's either we get to see her up close this way or we don't. If you go to her official site's fan section, you'll see they make absolutely no secret of this fact. In fact, there are photos from the first closed-set taping, which I believe a select group of lucky fans were able to sit in on and watch happen. Her official camp is absolutely candid about this process, and those who discredit her in their reviews are just ignorant of this process. Now, on to the review...
While One Night in Eden has more undeniable charm and La Luna drew us into another world more effectively, this latest concert hallmarks a great period in Sarah Brightman's career. She pulls all the stops in this one, and the sheer scope of what she puts together is a perfect accompaniment to this point in her career: she is at the top. If you think only getting the abridged soundtrack is enough to give you a taste of the Harem experience, you're dead wrong. You'll have to see this DVD, because the audio alone cannot portray the wonderful costumes, dances, and pure theatrics Sarah brings on stage.
The costumes are sheer decadence (meaning, of course, they are luxurious and fantastic). The diva is in top form, both vocally and physically, despite her age of forty-four, which she doesn't look anything like, mind you. The show is a lighting extravaganza, with the lighting director using each and every method and trick in his arsenol to use each and every bulb to highlight Sarah's presence. Together with the entourage of dancers who dance around her, Brightman is portrayed almost as a queen straight out of 1001 Arabian Nights. This, however, is how her fans know her best. Her shows almost always showcase her as the aloof goddess hovering on stage where her fans may best worship her. Despite all this, however, she still manages to come across as a warm, personable, charismatic performer.
While this concert was a little bit more 'showy' than I prefer seeing her, it was nonetheless dazzling. Sarah does not share a stage well, though, and she's best when she's the sole object of attention. The best performances feature her in this way: Who Wants to Live Forever, La Luna, Nessun Dorma (which was amazing), What a Wonderful World (probably the most memorable performance of the concert). The dancers, however, were terrific during the interludes. (My only gripe with the dancers was the 'biker chick' number where not only the dances, but the costumes were horribly out of place during the performance of 'Arabian Nights.) Featured vocalists Violet (née Amelia Brightman, Sarah's youngest sibling), Shwetta Shetty (indipop artist who contributed vocals on the Harem album), and Eli Barak were each brilliant. Shwetta, especially, is a powerhouse talent that brought much-needed 'ooomph' to Arabian Nights and What a Wonderful World.
Harem is a wonderful ride from beginning to end. She starts off strong with Harem then ends with the ever-crowd-pleasing Question of Honour. The camera captures each song very well. There is none of the fast camera changes, funky camera tricks, and downright schizoid camera handlings we've come to know and hate from recent concert releases -- thank God. (On a side note, I really wish that trend would die.) The camera is handled reverently, respectfully, and, most of all, maturely.
Video noise is the downfall of this DVD. It was destined to be the pinnacle concert DVD, but the director chose to use film that was subpar to what we expected. Pictures are not as crisp and clear as they were on La Luna, and the video noise is worse on this DVD than it is on One Night In Eden. Strangely enough, many scenes seem to be a bit 'smokey' in color. The color is not as vibrant or clear in some scenes because of this foggy quality. The worst is during far-away shots, because you can barely make out her face due to the video noise. For this reason, La Luna still ranks #1 as being the best DVD. Sound, however, on Harem Live is lush, rich, and everything I expected it to be. You can definitely see the images, and the only reason it was distracting for me was because I was expecting something just as good (or better) than La Luna when it came to video quality. Everything does show up well and it is watchable, don't get me wrong. I just wish video quality was better, because Brightman's concerts are such a visual feast for the eyes.
The extras on the second disc include some entertaining interviews with her entourage. It also includes a photo sequence that shows various photos, and while it plays, a few remixes of Harem songs play in the background -- worth listening to if you enjoyed the Harem album! There's also a video quiz that is quite infuriating, but the prize is a password to access a prize on the official site (this offer may or may not be still available, since it was a limited time offer). I finished the quiz and got my prize from the official site which was free photos of Sarah in concert from the Harem Tour called 'The Signature Collection.' I paid for s/h, of course, but that's more than fair.
All in all, this concert is still a must-have. It is a triumphant extravaganza sure to please fans and non-fans alike. It's a spectacle, and ranks high as one of my favorite concerts.

The only thing I can say after watching this classic Samhain set is (...)amazing." Don't expect a great edit or necessarily great camera work, but the footage is untouchable. We've all seen terrible live bootlegs floating around. Good thing the Samhain boxset released in '99 helped bring some quality Samhain footage to the fans. Now this is just the icing on the cake. Samhain live and raw. Upfront, closeup, sweat and all. If you were not lucky enough to be there, you will definately want to watch this.
Some really incredible live footage of Glenn Danzig circa '84 at the Stardust Ballroom in Hollywood, CA as well as killer footage of Eerie Von, Steve Zing, and Damien. They all look so young while you notice Glenn being the one behind the driving brutal force of Samahin. Hear Samhain play killer tracks from both "Initium" and "Unholy Passion." Also some old classics make it to the setlist such as "Die, Die My Darling" and "Horror Biz", Samhain style. Some classic moments as well where Glenn smiles and cracks a joke to the camera. And wait until you see the band go into "Archangel". Some of the best footage I have ever seen.
There is no question this will be a must for any Misfits - Samhain - Danzig fan.

George Harrison's "Dark Horse Years" DVD does not deliver value for money in terms of overall content. However, it's great to have a commercial release of George's music videos, especially "This Song," "Crackerbox Palace," "Got My Mind Set on You" and "When We Was Fab." The performance clips from Japan are memorable, yet one wishes the disc included the entire 1992 concert - and we certainly could have done without the "Shanghai Surprise" promo. "Dark Horse Years" is a mixed bag, but recommended to Harrison fans for the long-overdue music videos.

If you're wondering why this DVD is bargain-priced, one viewing will provide the answer. Both picture and sound quality are less than sterling; however, this set is still a good bargain. The viewer is treated to a glimpse of the young Dwight performing some songs which cannot be found elsewhere and, despite the picture and sound flaws, nonetheless offers an entertaining glimpse of Dwight in the early years. Dedicated fans of Dwight will enjoy this one; however, for those who want a better DVD (also at a good price), the "Austin City Limits" DVD is a longer and better set, without the technical flaws. Christmas With Kiri Te Kanawa - Kiri Te Kanawa, Michael George, Review

Christmas With Kiri Te Kanawa - Kiri Te Kanawa, Michael George,
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first experienced this concert six years ago in a television adaptation, where each carol was introduced by David Frost with an astonishing amount of misinformation. Even with that intrusion, Kiri te Kanawa's performance of such carols as "There is no Rose of Such Virtue" and "Of the Father's Heart Begotten" was superlative, and on this DVD, Christmas with Dame Kiri can be savored without commentary. She is well supported by the choirs of Coventry and Lichfield Cathedrals, by the BBC Philharmonic, and by the trumpet of Jouko Harjanne. She is perfectly complemented by bass-baritone Michael George, who deserves more acknowledgement in the packaging of the DVD. Kultur International is furthermore quite Scrooge-like in failing to provide any information about the versions of carols performed here, but that's my final "humbug" for this item. Kiri te Kanawa and Michael George perform with sincerity and art, the recording is good, and the camerawork and editing are satisfying, with panoramas of the cathedral juxtaposed with Graham Sutherland's Christ the King, and candle flames that resonate like the music itself.

Diana Ross Live - The Lady Sings... Jazz & Blues (Stolen Moments) (1992) Review

Diana Ross Live - The Lady Sings... Jazz and Blues (Stolen Moments) (1992)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This show must surely rank with Diana-excuse me-Miss Ross, as her best work. The epitome of diva, she triumphs with "The Lady Sings... Jazz & Blues." Ross looks good, she sounds good and performs exquisitely. She's seductive, flirty and ingratiating on stage and as she sashays through the audience. While Ross has never had the vocal range associated with many prominent singers, she performs the classic standards beautifully. With a band of the best musicians in the business behind her (on whom she bestows constant praise) she owns the night.
This show and some of the songs are an extension of her portrayal of the late Billie Holiday from the movie "Lady Sings the Blues". When she sings "God Bless The Child", "Strange Fruit", and "My Man", it is clear these songs embody a special meaning for her. Ross pulls out all the stops in this show to create an intimate, moving experience. She's gorgeously dressed in three stunning outfits, which appear to be made exclusively for her well-preserved physique. Her hair, (well, maybe too much) makeup and jewelry are dazzling.
In the DVD, you also see an unexpected modesty from Ross in her beginning commentary and when she introduces her daughter Rhonda, then briefly steps aside for her song. Rhonda's performance is acceptable, but she is young. Her style as a vocalist needs fine-tuning, development and maturity to really reveal how she will fare as a performer and in her mother's imposing shadow.
Whatever else she may or may not be, it cannot be denied that this is her finest hour. When you consider Ross' career and all that's been said and written about her and that which has been acknowledged by her, you understand three important things. First, she is uncompromising, demanding of excellence in her work and life. Second, she's sensitive, easily offended. Third, she makes no apology for her choices or persona. She is who she is, Supreme, on her own.
