Motown: The DVD (1970)
Average Reviews:

This DVD was something I looked forward to, but unfortunately, fell short of my expectations. First, off.... the first video of "Please Mr. Postman" by the Marvelettes carries HORRIFIC film faults running down BOTH SIDES of the picture throughout the entire performance. The sad part is that Universal released this sad quality version on DVD when the same footage on YOUTUBE doesn't carry that fault (Only has minor fault on one side, intermittently)a rank amateur obviously did the transfers for this DVD, as color balance if off many times, and some clips have been artificially sharpened, and the result is VERY grainy footage. Universal was also very cheap in that they did no digital correction of any film or video tape faults. The clip of "Tears Of A Clown" looks great, until the color flickers in a couple of places, something that could have easliy been corrected with today's technology.

Puccini - Tosca / Sinopoli, Zeffirelli, Domingo, Behrens, MET (1985) Review

Puccini - Tosca / Sinopoli, Zeffirelli, Domingo, Behrens, MET (1985)
Average Reviews:

This version, with Placido Domingo as Cavarodossi and Robert McCracken as Scarpia, is the best one I've ever seen. Domingo is famed in this century for the excellence of his Cavarodossi, and in this video you can plainly see why. You'd have to be made of stone not to cry like a baby after hearing his "E lucevan stelle" in the last act. Hildegard Beherens has the best rendition of "Vissi d'Arte" I've heard, better than Callas, than Marton, than Van Ness. Mac's Scarpia is amazingly evil; in his costume and makeup he looks somewhat like a toad, but his voice is a beautiful, rich baritone- almost too beautiful for this villainous role. All of them together make for a perfect casting of this opera, one of Puccini's best- not a single wasted note, action, or aria. "Tosca" is a jewel among Puccini's works- more accessible than "Butterfly" and "Turandot"- a good work for those just starting their enjoyment of this art form. And this version is a fine addition to the collection of afficionado and beginner alike.

The fiery, passionate grandeur of Puccini's Tosca came to life with the Metropolitan Opera's new production of March 1985. Franco Zeffirelli, who both directed and designed the sets for the production, left his audience positively agasp. Conducted by Guiseppe Sinopoli. Appearances made by: James Courtney, Italo Tajo, Placido Domingo, Hildegard Behrens, Cornell MacNeil, Anthony Laciura, Russell Christopher, Melissa Fogarty, and Richard Vernon. Subtitled in English and filmed on March 20 and 27, 1985.

if you like helen mirren you will love this movie, since it was expressly written for her by allan cubitt. there are art forgeries and theft, there is great music, gay characters and situations, and a good sampling of gangsters and the chaos they bring upon a group of people who are attempting for the first time to live an "ordinary, quiet life". And there is murder and deep personal loss. it shows that in even well meaning situations the price for breathing is very high indeed. this is what every mystery writer should aspire to, and again our british cousins show us how it is done.

I am sitting hear listening to Lee Williams cd as I write this review. This past week my mother, two of my sisters, my two daughters and I had the opportunity to see Lee Williams in concert. We injoyed it so much. I was inspired just to see how my kids reacted to his music. Most kids would rather listen to rap or anything else but gospel. My kids love his music and so do I. He is our FAVORITE GOSPEL ARTIST. I challenge anyone to just listen to one of his songs and I promise, they will not be sorry they did. This is the first time I have purchased cds where all the records are perfect. All of them has a meaning. Through his song you can tell he really knows the bible. That along inspires me. Just to know that he is not just singing what he heard. He is sending a message out to GODS people about what he know. He is a GOD sent man. I THANK GOD FOR HIM AND HIS MUSIC.

Bela Fleck: Throw Down Your Heart (2008) Review

Bela Fleck: Throw Down Your Heart (2008)
Average Reviews:

I just had the opportunity to see this documentary at a local independent theater. I thought "Banjos and Africa? Random! But could be fun..." I was so so so underestimating the power of this film! The music is nothing short of tremendous (one piece in particular, in the first quarter of the film, is virtually guaranteed to leave you breathless and astounded), Incredible, passionate voices and remarkable instruments combine to form sounds that will grab your soul and shake it.
Bela is fun to watch as he interacts with African musicians of various calibers. I love how unassuming he is, and how he speaks (as one of the African musicians points out) perfectly through his music, although his mouth sometimes fails him. What a remarkably talented and humble guy!
All in all, 5 stars +++. I went home and bought the MP3 album immediately, and can't wait to buy the DVD. :)

Simone: Baiana da Gema Review

Simone: Baiana da Gema

Even though many would argue that Simone's golden age was the 70s,this one work with Ivan Lins stands as the most complete and comprehensive ever cd recorded by the Brazilian songstress. From the beginning, the Lins tunes melt in Simone's mouth offering an autobiographical twist on the title track,an orgasmic danceable moment in FESTA and a confessional corner as she belts out in her unique voice the crude CINICA.Moreover, the duets with Lins and collaborations with Dudu Nobre,Zeca Pagodinho and Martinho da Vila only make the Cd more unique and enjoyable. This album is a toast to Simone's versatility as a singer and to Ivan Lins' creativity.

I love to watch this movie over and over again. It has great music. I was very sad to find there is no soundtrack to this movie but I have found a couple of the artists names that have songs on this movie if anyone is wondering. One of the songs "One Night" is from The Corrs and another song that is played at the end of the movie is called "Digge Dime" is from Burlap to Cashmere. You can find those songs on CD's here on Amazon. Check them out! Otherwise enjoy watching the movie over and over again like do. Wish they would release this on DVD at some point.

I Love Lucy - The Complete First Season (1951) Review

I Love Lucy - The Complete First Season (1951)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love "I Love Lucy." Whenever I find it on TV, I watch and find myself laughing no matter how many times I've seen the episode. Naturally, it was one of the first shows I knew I wanted on DVD. I wished I'd waited for this set, however.
When season one was first released, it was huge and expensive. Knowing how much I wanted the show, I ignored the price and bought it. Now, over a year later, we get a set more in line with the other three released to date. Now there are only seven discs, and it's much thinner. This takes up a fraction of what the original did on my shelf. Yet all the extras and quality are still there. Believe me, I checked.
So what do you get? You get the 35 official season 1 episodes plus the "lost pilot" that was found and released several years ago. The episodes have been restored and they haven't looked this good in years. Picture is original full frame black and white and sound is original mono. While there is occasional dust and such in the picture, for something 50 years old, this is pretty amazing. Bonus features include behind the scenes trivia and photos, guest cast information, restored footage (some of which is a hoot), the original animated opening, and a total of thirteen episodes of Lucy's radio show "My Favorite Husband" that inspired certain episodes.
For me, I find some of the episodes near the start of season 1 to be rather slow and not as funny. This is a common complaint of mine with most TV shows. The writers and actors need time to find the characters before things really take off. Still, there are some early gems like "The Diet" and "The Fur Coat." The second half more then makes up for the first with many classic moments and hilarious episodes like "The Ballet," "Breaking the Lease," "The Gossip," "Pioneer Women," "The Freezer," and "Lucy's Schedule." I can watch these episodes over and over again and laugh myself silly every time.
Of course, this doesn't mention the single most famous episode of season 1 - "Lucy Does a TV Commercial." If this title doesn't ring a bell, I have just one word for you. Vitameatavegamin.
This is the set that should have been released originally. If you waited, hoping that Paramount would see the light, your patience has been rewarded big time.

Isaac Hayes - The Black Moses of Soul Review

Isaac Hayes - The Black Moses of Soul
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First a little warning... released on video ages ago, long out of print and virtually impossible to find, if you already have the VHS version, don't breathe too much of a sigh of release... It definitely is *NOT* digitally remastered... The sound still sounds like it was recorded... well back in 1973 (in all fairness) and the picture is somewhat dark. With that said... what do you expect... this is SOUL MUSIC and a live concert in 1973... and you know the POWERS THAT BE weren't going to send out their BEST camera crew and recording equipment... Still, this is a window back in time, and considering it was recorded live in 1973 let's give the producers a break... despite the face that the recording could definitely have been cleaned up (even with the software I have on my own computer !)
The group features the entire MOVEMENT, HOT BUTTERED SOUL and that hardcore bald check (Is she the model from those old Ohio Players albums covers ?) Tunes are LIGHT MY FIRE, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF, NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE, BY THE TIME I GET TO PHOENIX, LOOK OF LOVE and I STAND ACCUSED and the playing time is 78 minutes. Issac Haye's is wearing the chains and the audience (overdubbed or not) is quite hyped. - - Though the concert gets off to a bit of a slow start, the soul and orchestral arrangements are totally off the wall by the time Haye's hits on NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE and you realize why in that era if you had a chick and wanted to impress her, it was out with the fro and in with some scalp !
Overall... if you can get back being spoiled by recent advances in digital remastering and place yourself in the position of the people who were viewing it when it first came out... you'll dig it majorly !

Though the actual track 'Shine a Light' from Exile on Main Street is not played during the (film version of this) set, it is an excellent title for this rock documentary as Martin Scorcese is shining a light so to speak on the Stones themselves, and this light shines mighty bright and mighty close. But Scorcese is not as invasive as you might expect. And this documentary/concert film does not feel like an expose as much as a celebration of a band that still has some kick left in it. Instead of being overly reverent and even elegaic (as perhaps he was in The Last Waltz) Scorcese, takes a lighthearted & lighthanded approach. The first thing that Scorcese documents is the planning of the show itself and the miscommunications that took place between what the Stones wanted (a big venue) and what Martin wanted (an intimate one); miscommunications that could have been avoided had the band been available to actually meet face to face with Scorcese, but these and other miscommunications are treated more as running jokes than as genuine problems. Another running joke is that meticulous detail man Martin Scorcese (perhaps the only living director with a fame that rivals the Stones own) wants to know ahead of time what the set list will be or at least what the first song will be so that he can plan his first shot, but the Stones keep it a secret until seconds before the show begins. Its funny even though no one really thinks for a second that with his arsenal of cameras on and off stage there is any chance that Martin Scorcese will not get the exact shots he wants. But even while having some laughs with the band (at the bands and at his own expense), Scorcese is excellent at capturing what an immense task it is working with a band that is not used to surrendering control nor opening up on camera (and Scorcese inserts several old interviews into the concert footage to document Mick's ability to dodge questions with charm and Keith's utter refusal to play the q & a game at all). The irony is that the Stones have been public figures for over four decades now but we really still don't know them very well. Scorcese does a very good job at remedying this situation by peeling back the Stones mystique and allowing us to see the real personalities behind the public performances. As with his Dylan documentary, he does this by going though the immense Stones Interviews archive and coming up with some very rare interview footage (much of it from Asian and European tv programs). We get to hear the notoriously reticent Charlie discussing an alternative career as a painter, and Ron Wood discussing Keith and how he is nothing like his public image, "Keith's a very decent and very moral guy". The interviews are culled from all phases of their career and are very brief and very selectively inserted between the live songs. Most of them are humorous and/or ironic. Notably absent: any mention of Brian Jones or Mick Taylor or Bill Wyman.
No doubt there will be Stones fans who wish that Scorcese had teamed up with the '72 or '76 or '78 Stones, when the band was a bit more like Scorcese's screen outlaws, but better late than never.
For Stones fans the thrill (and it is immediate and lasts the entire show) is having the feeling of being onstage with the Stones. Jack White, Buddy Guy, and Christina Aguilera all do guest stints onstage but we as audience members feel like we are onstage as well and this is the truly brilliant thing about this film. The cameras are so close that we actually get to see the band play (and see who plays which guitar lines) and hear the between song banter between band members. Scorcese allows us to affirm or reaffirm that Mick is without a doubt the leader of this band and his relentless energy and seductive charms seem to wow his bandmates as much as they wow the crowd. Micks age shows in the close-ups but his real instruments, his voice & his body, seem completely immune from the ravages of time. Keith, at times, seems a bit lost (as when Christinsa Aguilera steps onstage) and he misses chords in a few places, but Scorcese's intimate style really serves Richards well. He is an intensely likable guy who loves what he does and still seems to feel adorably awkward when he takes center stage to sing "You Got the Silver" & "Connection." He is in many ways Mick's opposite. The chemistry of the band and especially the chemistry that exists between the Glimmer Twins is the thing that continues to fascinate and continues to evade documentation.
The show is intense and intimate and revealing. The guest appearances are well chosen. And the ending (which I will not reveal) is perfect.
Note on the soundtrack: The 2 cd edition of the Shine a Light soundtrack will contain four bonus tracks ("Paint it Black", "Little T & A", "I'm Free", & "Shine a Light").

Abhimaan is a delight for fans of vintage Bollywood. The storyline is simple, cool pop singer meets innocent and beautiful village girl they marry and things go awry when her talent outshines his. The songs in the movie are superb S D Burman at his best. The DVD has a song selection with English subtitles so English-speaking viewers can interpret the songs. I had been singing one for years without really knowing what the lyrics meant at all. Now I know!
The saris worn by the female cast are a delight to behold so any sari enthusiasts will find this a wonderful source of beautiful saris. This is a movie that does not fade with time. It is eminently watchable and I know I will be watching it again and again!Abhimaan
