I was at both nights of taping in Toronto. These guys deliver every time. They love what they do and they do it well. Individually, they are very, very good, but when they harmonize, they knock your socks off. Ryan IS "Bad Bad LeRoy Brown". "Hallelujah" is wonderful with Ryan, Keith and Neil. Damian is adorable "Watching All The Girls Go By", in creamy white, looking like he belongs in an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. Paul owns "You Raise Me Up" and "Doo Whacka Doo." George, the lone Scot, among the Irish singers rocked the house with "500 Miles" And of course Keith doing a surfing medley on his red guitar, was so appropriate for the "Surfer Dude". I had really stopped paying attention to music until this group of young men were showcased in "Celtic Thunder the Show." The musical director Phil Coulter has done an excellent job of selecting the right music for each young man's beautiful interpretation of proven covers and new material written by
Mr. Coulter himself. "It's Entertainment" will be a wonderful addition to your musical library.

I saw this video on sale at a local store before it was available on Amazon.com... I thought to myself.. there must be a reason it's on sale. Why so cheap!? After purchasing it and watching it numerous times, I still cannot answer that question. I only regret not buying it sooner! This is a fabulous DVD. It not only shows smokey being personal with the audience, but you get a sense of the man behind the great song library. (Did you know he wrote ALL those songs?) He's really incredible... If anything he's gotten better with age. If you are the slightest fan of his, make sure you pick this up and add it to your collection. I'm sure you won't regret it. I still enjoy putting it on as I work around the house and find I sit down and watch certain cuts over and over again. Watch how he handles the jealous boyfriend in the audience. And he does it without making anybody angry. The man is SMMMMoooooooth!

One of music's greatest performers tracks through his hits and audience favorites such as Tears Of A Clown, Shop Around, You've Really Got A Hold On Me, Ooh Baby Baby, and a wonderful encore performance of Going To A Go Go. Also includes a spectacular Hits Medley beginning with The Way You Do The Things You Do and closing with My Girl.

Best of Both Worlds Concert: The 3-D Movie (Anaglyph Extended Edition) Review

Best of Both Worlds Concert: The 3-D Movie (Anaglyph Extended Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a 16 year old male, I recieved far more than several strange looks upon entering the theatre to see this movie. There was one girl in particular who sat in front of me and managed to turn around and look at me with a rather pathetic lack of comprehension somewhere between 10 to 20 times before the movie started. I could just see in her eyes that she, like many of the other close-minded immature tweens whom surrounded me, was thoroughly considering either my sanity or my sexual orientation. It really is incredibly unsettling that our society is as bigoted and incapable as it is. Target demographic, shmarget demographic; Miley/Hannah's music is incredibly entertaining, well composed, and, at times, moving, regardless of age or gender.
BUT anyway, on with the review...
Miley's voice is amazing. It's even better live than on her CD's, and this film presents absolutely no exception. Her control and range are darn impressive, while at the same time her voice maintains an innocence and untapped potential that makes it satisfyingly difficult to stop listenting to her. I have to say that I love the unique controlled vocal crack that seems to be her signature during extended segments of vocal influctuation. She's also absolutely fearless; how many 15 year olds could keep their composure in front of 15,000+ people nearly every night with the comfort and facility that she does?
And on top off all her talent, she is, to put it incredibly frankly, pretty darn hott.
The instrumentation throughout the concert was superb. Her lead guitarist and drummer especially were outstanding in my opinion. One thing that I love about concert experiences is that the music itself is always far better than it is on the recording, since record companies and such can't put restrictions on spantaneous improvisations by the musicians. It was also a treat to listen to Miley play an acoustic guitar during "I Miss You."
Perhaps the best part of the film was the 3D effect. The glasses, thank God, weren't the blue and red sort that leave your color perception ruined and your head aching for hours, but were much better quality plastic ones.
I happen to be an aspiring filmmaker, so coming from a cinematographic point of view, this movie left nothing to be desired. Sweeping camera shots, pleasantly unexpected close ups, and creatively fun visual tricks in post production made the absolute best use of the 3D effect possible. At one point during viewing, I almost subconsciously convinced myself that I actually WAS right there, front row at her performance. You literally feel like you could reach out and touch her at any time.
The vibrant use/balance of color was in no way distorted by the glasses [if anything, the 3D effect enhanced them] and the very well designed stage setup and enormous venue could've made even the smallest theatre seem wonderfully spacious.
One of my personal favorite moments of the experience was the period of time in which the incomparable Jonas Brothers played a few songs while Miley changed. Their dramatic music, rich instrumentation, and dependably deep and passionate performances/vocals alone were worth the $15, and one can only hope that they will release a filmed concert as well... Haha, but I digress.
My only complaint would have to be that the entire concert is not included. There were numerous songs that I was looking forward to, but that didn't make it past the cutting room floor. I suppose they had to pick and choose between performances though since they had to fit behind-the-scenes action as well.
All in all, this movie is incontrovertably entertaining and simply bursting with refreshing talent. People can tell me I'm "not supposed" to enjoy what Miley has to offer all they want, but the fact of the matter is that she is a quality entertainer and to refuse fandom based merely on social expectation is ridiculous and pathetic. I cannot wait until this DVD comes out, and you can bet that it'll be in my DVD player before the day it becomes available is through.

We LOVE this Elmo video! My daughter is 18 months old and we have several Sesame Street videos (mostly Elmo's World). She just loves Elmo. What makes this dvd different is that it ISN'T like Elmo's world. We love Elmo's World, but are happy for a change from the characters that are in it (ie: Noodle family).
This has appearances from celebrities and fantastic songs in it that are sure to be classics. I cannot compare to Best of Elmo 1, but I can definitely say this is one of our favorite DVDs in our collection.

Nanci Griffith - One Fair Summer Evening Plus Review

Nanci Griffith - One Fair Summer Evening Plus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In some shots, she has a scarf wrapped around the belt of her dress. On others shots, it's not there! Now you see it, now you don't - sometimes in the same song, it's there one second and not the next. Should we put it down to poor continuity? What the heck - I don't mind....
What I do mind is the fact that this is such a warm and wonderful little gem of a DVD. I've always liked the album - all the songs are fabulous, but to see her perform them as on the CD is very special. This seems to be an intimate little concert, with only James Hooker seen accompanying Nanci on keyboards. However, I'm certain there is at least one more guitarist playing in the background somewhere.
Whatever! It's a little masterpiece and Nanci has this really comfortable rapport with the audience, which adds to the intimacy. At the end of the set, with the credits going up, there's a nifty little treat when she sings the "Wichita Falls Waltz" - a short and humorous piece which I had not heard before and is not on the original album.
The videos are a joy - I love all five tracks, but "I Knew Love", "I Don't Want To Talk About Love" and "Late Night Grande Hotel", (in which she looks stunning and different - it's the eye make-up and the fringe) are fantastic. The songs are breathtaking, but the videos enhance them.
Go and buy this - it is a wonderful gem. I wonder if there are any more of these DVDs just waiting to be unleashed on the unsuspecting public. Let's hope so.

Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959) Review

Darby O'Gill and the Little People (1959)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw this in theatres when first released. I was a kid, and awestruck. Then the VHS came along. It was good. And now, the best DVD you could imagine! The film could stand on its own, and at a good price. The extras are generous...2 short documentaries, and a scripted "making of" involving Disney himself. Loads of fun! The wonderful Albert Sharpe came out of retirement to make this, and he is sharp as a tack; a thoroughly complete performance. He should've had Oscar recognition. For that matter, this film was not nominated for any Oscars at all. The sweet ballad "Irish Lass", though a hit at the time, was ignored, as well as the wonderful Special Effects...and, sadly, Sharpe's performance. The most interesting element of the film is seeing Sean Connery with hair (?); he gives a fine performance and isn't that bad a singer; good insight about how he got this role, in the extras, but I won't blab away the stuff. Janet Munro made her Disney debut, here, and he used her in many others (I liked her in "Swiss Family Robinson"). I don't know what happened to her. She later gave a remarkable performance in "The Day the Earth Caught Fire"; I really like her a lot. She is a natural beauty. This is PURE Disney...sweet, serious, and especially, great for kids. Let the fantasy take them to another place, as it did for me, when I first watched it. It's Albert Sharpe, though, that gives the crowning performance of his wonderful career. Watch it. Love it. Always believe...

I bought this DVD after I realized it was Chris Rice singing "When Did You Fall in Love" on the radio. Well I fell in love with every song on this DVD. You feel like you've been invited over to a private concert at Chis Rice's house. (It was filmed in his backyard and living room.) Now I have purchased two of his CD's "Amusing" and "What a Heart is Beating For" So glad I discovered this artist. His clear, smooth voice with great melodics and clever, heart touching lyrics....well need I say more!?

Return to Lonesome Dove (1993) Review

Return to Lonesome Dove (1993)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I once read that when Larry McMurtry saw RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE he was so enraged he responded by writing "Streets of Laredo." A Lonesome Dove fan such as myself can only speculate what kind of sequel might have been written had "Return" never hit the airwaves. Maybe the characters of Newt and July Johnson would have survived into such a sequel; perhaps the Hat Creek Cattle Company would have flourished in Montana, rather than Call having to go back to Texas to eek out a living as a bounty hunter. But I digress.
RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE tries hard, very hard, to deliver a story worthy enough to follow the original mini-series. And with gifted actors like Jon Voight, Oliver Reed, and Louis Gossett, Jr., it certainly had the star power. But instead, this sequel goes down the road of "been there, done that": another livestock drive from Texas to Montana (only this time, the animals are wild horses); another murderous half-breed villain (Dennis Haysbert as "Cherokee Jack"); and a "new" Gus McRae in the form of Ranger Gideon Walker (William Peterson). We also are given a bonus storyline centering around Gus' illegitimate daughter, appropriately named Augustina Vega (Nia Peeples), who hates her late father and is obsessed to confront Call, who she believes is responsible for the death of her mother. Throw a grumpy and petulant Clara Allen (Barbara Hershey) into the mix, and RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE comes across as contrived and as palatable as a piece of horse leather.
The cast does well with what it has to work with, and to be fair, the film does contain some poignant and entertaining moments. But RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE's most glaring fault is the fact that it was made at all. The producers should have adhered to the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Dreamgirls (Two-Disc Showstopper Edition) (2006) Review

Dreamgirls (Two-Disc Showstopper Edition) (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those of you who aren't familiar with DREAMGIRLS it was a hit Broadway musical, created in 1981, based "loosely" on the real monster girl group The Supremes, Berry Gordy and Motown. And although it took almost 25 years to make, the movie version is spectacular.
Following the meteoric rise of the fictitious "Dreams," the story takes place in Detroit in 1962 and ends in Los Angeles in 1975. In between you witness the joy, sorrow and bitterness--as some dreams die, while others live. And being a period movie, DREAMGIRLS doesn't feel dated or unrealistic. It captures the excitement and turbulence of the 60s or at least the romanticized ideal of it...perfectly.
Anyway enough about the movie and on to the DVD.
This dvd set contains two dvds:
***DVD #1 FEATURE FILM; 12 EXTENDED/ADDITIONAL MUSICAL NUMBERS
I won't list the 12 songs but the title track "Dreamgirls" and the show stopper "And I Am Telling You..." are not part of this 12. With the exception of the song "Effie, Sing My Song," at least from what I could tell, most of these musical numbers are just different edits/film cuts than those that made it into the film. For instance, you'll see more of the performance rather than the cutaways to other scenes, which you see in the movie...so they're not sung differently.
What's good about this is that you get to see the entire performance of the opening acts(The Stepp Sisters, L'il Albert and The Tru-Tones, Tiny Joe Dixon) without the cutaway shots that show what's going on behind the stage. No additional lyrics: the songs are exactly as they are on the deluxe edition music cd of Dreamgirls: Music From The Motion Picture [2-CD Deluxe Edition].
One alternative musical number that's very different is the song "Effie, Sing My Song." In the movie, the lines are spoken. However they did film the song version where C.C. and Effie share a duet. And that's included here.
***DVD #2 DOCUMENTARY ON THE MAKING OF DREAMGIRLS; ORIGINAL AUDITION AND SCREEN TEST VIDEOS; FEATURETTES ABOUT THE FASHION, FILM EDITING, THEATRICAL LIGHTING; PRE-VISUALIZATION SEQUENCES; IMAGE GALLERY
In all fairness, I haven't seen the entire second dvd. The reason being is that the documentary on the making of DREAMGIRLS is nearly TWO-HOURS long! Running at one-hour and fifty-five minutes, the documentary called "Building the Dream" chronicles the journey that started as an idea from Broadway creators Tom Eyen, Henry Krieger, and Michael Bennett to finally becoming the most hyped and anticipated film of 2006. But don't worry, that's not the beef of the documentary. Most of it takes you behind the scenes of what it took to put this huge movie together from the set design to the casting; from the choreography to staying true to the original score.
It's a fascinating look at the challenges director Bill Condon faced when deciding to take on this project. I always thought that "Dreamgirls" would've been easy to make into a film because you already started with everything in place. How wrong I was! Not only are you competing in a genre not too popular today, but you have to compete with the beloved original. Well, I must pay homage to Condon. He pulled it off.
Anyway, the documentary is told through home video of the recording sessions, casting calls, set design, rehearsals etc., as well as principal cast member interviews and of course the main people working behind the scenes like director Condon, executive producers, choreographers, music producers etc.
If nothing else, this documentary alone is worth the extra price for the two-set dvd of DREAMGIRLS.
And for those of you die hard fans of the original Broadway show or soundtrack, who liked this movie version, will be happy to know that the song "A'int No Party" is supposed to be included in the "audition tapes" section of the special features. There is a snippet of it in the documentary and Anika Noni Rose was working that song. So I'm sure it has to be included in the screen tests. But even if it isn't, remember I haven't seen the entire second dvd, the documentary "Building The Dream" makes up for it.
Anyway, if you enjoyed the movie, you'll enjoy this dvd set. It's a dream that will give you "more and more." If you haven't seen the movie, well you're in for a treat. It's exciting and keeps you at the edge of your seat. And not being an action film, that's saying a lot!

Director Bill Condon brings Tom Eyen's Tony award-winning Broadway musical to the big screen in a tale of dreams, stardom, and the high cost of success in the cutthroat recording industry. The time is the 1960s, and singers Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), and Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) are about to find out just what it's like to have their wildest dreams come true. Discovered at a local talent show by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), the trio known as "the Dreamettes" is soon offered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of opening for popular singer James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Subsequently molded into an unstoppable hit machine by Taylor and propelled into the spotlight as "the Dreams," the girls quickly find their bid for the big time taking priority over personal friendship as Taylor edges out the ultra-talented Effie so that the more beautiful Deena can become the face of the group. Now, as the crossover act continues to dominate the airwaves, the small-town girls with big-city dreams slowly begin to realize that the true cost of fame may be higher than any of them ever anticipated.

Hallelujah (1929) Review

Hallelujah (1929)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first all-African American feature film ever made, "Hallelujah!" was also King Vidor's first "talkie," and one that he was willing to forfeit his salary for in order to make.
Those who might be troubled by "racial stereotypes" are failing to see the exquisite beauty of this film, and its place in cultural history; it is an astounding film for all Americans, especially those of African descent, to watch and be proud of.
A melodramatic morality tale, it is about a naive cotton farmer who falls into the net of a pretty but corrupt girl, and his rocky road from sin to redemption.
It also shows the hardship of the life of a sharecropper; the wrenching poverty and backbreaking labor, as well as the faith to survive it all.
Daniel L. Haynes is extraordinary as Zeke. Had he been born 50 years later, he would no doubt have been a major world superstar. Incredibly handsome and charismatic, he was also blessed with a marvelous voice, and great acting ability. Thank goodness this film exists, as a remembrance of his enormous talent.
The other members of the cast are also excellent, with Nina Mae McKinney as the seductive Chick and Fanny Belle DeKnight, as Mammy Johnson, Zeke's mother who never gives up hope for her wayward son. The scene where Mammy holds the children in her arms and sings a lullaby is one that moves me to tears; this is a film that expresses much love, and the best of human characteristics.
The music is glorious, combining spirituals like "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" with songs like Irving Berlin's "Waiting at the End of the Road," and there are also some superb dance numbers. I was particularly delighted by the short but well executed sand soft shoe in the bar scene, a style that started in the early 1910s during the minstrel shows. Tap dancing has its roots in slavery, and the history of this unique American art form is fascinating; anyone interested in the evolution of American dance will love this film.
The b&w cinematography by Gordon Avil is crisp and uses stark contrasts, and for the most part, there is little evidence of its age. Coming from the same era, and with similar themes of good and evil, this film shares a kinship with the DuBose Heyward and Gershwin versions of "Porgy and Bess." Total running time is 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Beaches (1988) Review

Beaches (1988)
Average Reviews:

This may very well be the saddest movie I have ever seen in my life, but it is also one of the best. If you have not seen it yet, I highly recommend that you do. It tells the story of two young women who meet when they are 11 years old. At a glance, they seem like two completely different people, but in the end, it's their strong devotion to their friendship that make them so close. Bette Midler does an excellent job in her portrayal as CC Bloom, a feisty redhead who is determined to succeed in music and will do almost anything to do so. Hilary Whitney, played by the talented Barbara Hershey, is a quiet, reserved woman who often finds herself jealous of CC's rising success. CC and Hilary may be very different, but they grow even closer when Hilary gives birth to a child--a beautiful little girl named Victoria. When Hilary becomes diagnosed with a fatal disease, she is forced to search her soul and strengthen her relationships with CC and Victoria. Throughout the movie, CC and Hilary go through many difficult times, but in the end, their friendship prevails. I definitely recommend this movie to everyone, but don't expect to have dry eyes at the end! It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will touch every piece of your heart. It really does show that even though two friends may be very different from one another, and even though they may go through a lot of rough times, it is the strength of their friendship that will be the decisive element. Go see this movie--you won't be sorry!

Bill Gaither Presents: Country Bluegrass Homecoming, Vol. 1 (2008) Review

Bill Gaither Presents: Country Bluegrass Homecoming, Vol. 1 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
THIS IS A VERY GOOD,(and also "Great") HOMECOMING CONCERT DVD. The atmosphere, or at least the background props are great and go along with the music performed. This is one of those dvd's that seems to grow on you the more you watch it. After watching it some more, I think it might very well be a 5 star concert, it just depends on who is watching it I guess. It does have some real "gems" in it.
It consists of 21 songs, and a song during the credits part.
It contains approximately 95 minutes of music. It features performances from: Vince Gill, the Gaither Vocal Band, The Issacs, Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives, Ralph Stanley, George Jones, The Grascals, Dailey Vincent, Cherryholmes, the Easters, Gordon Mote, Jimmy Fortune, Rhonda Vincent, Larry Sparks, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and many others.
The Issacs do an outstanding job on the song "Walk On" in their performance, they seem to be making a reference to the lengendary bluesman Robert Johnson, because in the song they sing - "If the devil is at the crossroads waiting to make you a deal - Walk On!!! - Don't Stop"
I'm referring to the story about Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil at the crossroads in return for guitar playing greatness.
Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives are excellent bluegrass musicians and they harmonize very well together.
Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver are excellent bluegrass musicians also!!!
George Jones does a great job singing his songs and gives great testimony about calling for Vestal Goodman, when he was in the hospital recovering from a bad auto accident. This is followed by a song with the theme of "Call on Me - when you're ready to find JESUS".
Also you get Vince Gill performing his special song "Go Rest High on that Mountain". After he ends it, the congregation joins in singing the song.
The other musicians are very good also, but the ones mentioned above really stoodout for me.
Also, you get 2 additional bonus songs.
This dvd is more country music oriented than the Bill Gathier "Gospel Bluegrass Homecoming " dvd's. However, I recommend both series.

Soul Men (2008) Review

Soul Men (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Soul Men," a 2008 release, is a musical comedy road picture, with a template of sadness behind it. It stars more frequent action hero, Samuel L. Jackson, and the late Bernie Mac. It was written by Robert Ramsey and Matthew Stone, and directed by Malcolm Lee, noted American filmmaker Spike Lee's kid brother. Jackson plays Louis Hinds; Mac, Floyd Henderson. Together, they were once "The Real Deal," popular soul singers, and released a single record album. But it's been decades since they were together. Then the death of the supposedly legendary Marcus Hooks (John Legend), once their lead singer, gives them a very good reason to reunite: there's to be a memorial concert at New York's famous Apollo Theater, at which they've been invited to sing. It might just jump start their fallow singing careers.
So, quick as you can say Jackie Robinson, it becomes a road picture, as the quarreling ex-colleagues jump into a Cadillac in California, with four days to reach New York. There is lots of grumbling and fighting, and, be warned if it bothers you, a great deal of obscene language: with m-----f----- in almost every scene. Along the road, they will bump up against Rosalee, played by Jennifer Coolidge, in a distasteful sexist interlude that I could have done without. Also Cleo (Sharon Leal, Dreamgirls ), who is supposedly the daughter of one of the leads; they're initially not sure which; Lester (Affion Crockett), Cleo's none too bright, abusive boyfriend; Danny Epstein (Sean Hayes), their new manager, and Philip, (Adam Herschman), Epstein's gofer. Towards the end of the picture we meet the late great funk/soul musician Isaac Hayes, playing himself.
Hayes is very visibly ill and weak - he is used to do little more than walk across the screen. And I wish the producers had spent more money on the actors playing Philip (Herschman) and Cleo (Leal): they appear in many scenes, and granted, Leal is certainly pretty enough and sings very well; but they don't bring much to the screen.
However, the charismatic leads do bring a lot to their parts. Their comic timing is spot-on; Jackson's a good straight man, yet he can both pitch and catch: go know. The singing is fine, and the movie boasts a nice sound track of 1970's funk/soul hits. All in all, it's an enjoyable film. And, while it is the last film appearance of Mac and Hayes, I can recommend it as worth seeing for more than curiosity. Nevertheless, at film's post script, as the final credits roll, the interviews with Mac and Hayes are likely to bring tears to your eyes: they did to mine.

Gods Must Be Crazy, Out Of Africa, or Hatari, it ain't. What it is, instead, is a good and fun adventure in Kenya. Brian Denehey is terrific as the stubborn-old-coot-safari-guy. It has moments of charm and wild abandon. The cinematography is excellent. You'll love just watching the African scenery go by. The story leaves something to be desired. But, on the whole, it's a pretty good movie.

This particular DVD is a Concert for a TV show that aired in 1983. It is a definitive look at the "Prime" of this legend of "Tex-Mex music" named Freddy Fender. Although the concert only lasts 40 minutes it still captures the Singer at his finest. Singing songs as the comercially known "Wasted days and Wasted Nights" and other Hits such as "Before the Next tear drop falls" And after seeing this DVD you will be pleased to know that there really is no reason to want to see more, because what you see is the really in fact the Best of his Music and those 40 minutes will keep you entertained from minute to minute until the end.
I was not a Freddy Fender fan but I can say this after seeing this concert I definatly do enjoy this DVD and you will too.And if your a fan this should be in your collection
