(More customer reviews)My wife and I, along with a friend, were lucky enough to catch the first show of the tour that this DVD captures. It was in a very small venue in Washington DC, filled to capacity (and then some). The female string quartette started the evening with several numbers and then the band took the stage. Bryan Ferry actually had to read the music and lyrics to the first song ("The Way You Look Tonight") and seemed visably relieved at the warm response he was given. From this somewhat rocky start, the Bryan Ferry and the band amazed us with its broad range of musical styles, moving seemlessly from a Cole Porter song to "Editions of You" to "Falling In Love Again" and then "In Every Dream Home" (a song about an inflatable doll).
I have been a Roxy Music fan since 1972 and own nearly every album and or CD (or both) that Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry have produced. I was lucky enough to see Roxy Music perform many years ago and have seen Bryan Ferry now three times. While I agree that he doesn't have the strongest voice, it is, in my opinion, an almost perfect voice for this tour and the album it promoted.
This DVD captures the energy that Ferry exudes during his shows. He truly seems to enjoy performing in front of an audience and the entire band shares in that enthusiasm.
In the show I saw in DC, most of the older songs (e.g., the ones from the 30's) were grouped together, with some Roxy and Bryan Ferry songs in the latter third of the show, followed by a few more old ones and ending, of course, with "Do the Strand". That is the one song I really miss from this DVD. I have seen it done four times and I have loved it every time.
If you are a fan of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music, get this DVD and be sure and share it with friends. If you watch one song, make it "Jealous Guy" - the mix, with an emphasis on the string quartette, make the song especially good and moving. Enjoy it.

Natalie Cole - Ask a Woman Who Knows (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)Take some great singing, a big band and talent from one of todays best jazz vocalist Natalie Cole...and you have "Ask a Woman Who Knows", a collection of classic jazz, with todays best and greats in the field of live entertainment. This DVD is reminicent of the "Unforgettable" outing, as Natalie reunites with producer Tommy LiPuma. Some very treasured tunes that are not heard frequently with arrangements by Rob Mounsey, Alan Broadbent and John Clayton. The result is lush-velvet strings and blends of brass echoing the tempo and mood of the tune.
Some stand outs come to mind ~ "SO MANY STARS", from the pens of Sergio Mendes/Alan & Marilyn Bergman leap from the page, with a haunting performance by Natalie that leaves you wanting more ~ "SOON", this George Gershwin standard was a favorite of mine back when Jacklie Gleason and Bobby Hackett blazed a trail of hit albums in the '50s, but when Natalie sinks her teeth into this one, you've heard the best from todays best ~ "I'M GLAD THERE IS YOU", another favorite from my days of listening to Johnny Mathis, the arrangement on this CD lends to atmospheric blends with Roy Hargrove on flugelhorn ~ "BETTER THAN ANYTHING", joined by Diana Krall, Natalie and Krall give their fans a rare lyrical treat ~ "MY BABY JUST CARE FOR ME", not only is this a classic song, but a classic performance by a classy gal.
This is just like being there with 18 tracks performed live in London...mixed in 5.1 and Stereo, simply outstanding...also includes two bonus tracks "MORE THAN YOU'LL EVER KNOW and "I'M BEGINNING TO SEE THE LIGHT". Exclusive interview with Natalie Cole that have many insights into her life and performances, gotta love it!

Eugene Onegin Review

(More customer reviews)This perfomance of Onegin is one of the most musical I have seen over the past 30 years. I do remember great performances at the Metropolitan opera with Zylis-Gara and Gedda and a great performance by the Bolshoi when they first came to the Met about 30 years ago. The beauty of this performance however is the total perfection of ensemble staging, singing, acting and conducting all within beautiful sets. The individual singers have excellent techniques, unforced beautiful voices and a true feeling for the nuances of the opera which is conducted to perfection by an unlisted conductor who projects his great love and appreciation of the score. The performers are ideally cast and are embodiments of their roles. However, it is the high quality of the singing and interpretations of every singer that make this such a satisfactory performance. Of course honors go to the beautiful Tatanya whose transformation from the innocent young girl of the letter scene to the mature torn woman of the final scene is reflected in her voice and acting. The same can be said for the Onegin whose arrogance at the beginning to the defeated and tragic figure of the final scene moves the opera to its inevitable conclusion. The Lensky sings and acts the role of the young poet with an inner passion that illuminates the unfolding tragedy;the famous aria is movingly delivered. One is struck by the high quality of artistry of the other members of cast--There is not a wobbly or strained voice. The sets are traditional and beautiful reflecting the lyricism of the text and opera. Unfortunately the modern settings and stagings of Onegin at the Metropolitan and Kirov are not of the same caliber as this performance--in fact they are to be avoided. The only complaint that I have is that this is a 1984 taped live performance, and the technology is not up to 2006 standards--However, the innate beauty of every aspect of this production overides any technical limitations. Onegin is captured as the composer may have envisioned it in his mind as he wrote this glorious music. A gold standard has been set by this performance.

Jose Alfredo Jimenez: La Historia del Rey (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)Anyone who likes the legendary singer/songwriter Jose Alfredo Jimenez will treasure this collection of exceptional film clips of Jimenez singing his poetic, soulful songs in his unique, somewhat rusted by tequila voice. Jimenez was born in 1926, and his career flourished from the late '40s until his death in 1973, and he wrote a vast quantity of material that was to be successful not only for himself, but for many of Latin music's top singing stars, then and now.
The film quality is superb considering its age, and sound quality excellent. The first 6 tracks are in b&w, and include a duet with Amalia Mendoza, and the following 9 are in color, and make up nearly 45 minutes of outstanding music by one of the great masters of Mexican music. Includes a brief clip with Pedro Vargas, accompaniment by the Mariachi de Tecalitlan, and "extras" like a photo gallery. Track 6, written for Maria Felix, has clip of her, looking incredibly glamorous, thanking him after the song. Track list:

Helmut Lotti - From Russia With Love (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)This DVD was great! The scenery was most beautiful and of course, Helmut's singing only enhanced that beauty. For those who do not understand Russian, there are subtitles in 4 languages. It was delightful to listen to the old traditional folk songs as well as some newer ones. One has become my favorite, Lutshje Bulo. I may wear out the DVD player repeating it again and again. Also interesting was learning Helmut sang the songs phonetically, as he doesn't speak the language. Sure could have fooled me! His accent was right on the money and his arrangements were outstanding. I think you'll be very happy with this DVD. I know I was. As a newbie to Helmut Lotti, I plan to get more of his music CDs and DVDs. If they are all as good as this piece is, I'm sure I'll be delighted.

Joe Jackson - Live in Tokyo (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)Joe Jackson Live in Tokyo has always been one of the better concert videos on the market. Rather than relying on special effects, the focus is on the performer and the songs - the presentation of which is straightforward. Though the between-songs banter is unusually subdued (because the comments are being translated for the Japanese audience by an offstage interpreter), the concert is presented in its entirety, without gimmicky editing or other visual tricks.
The emphasis here is on songs from the "Big World" album, but several other Joe Jackson favorites are also here, among them "You can't get what you want (till you know what you want)", "On your radio", a beautifully re-arranged "Steppin' out", and "Sunday papers" (renamed "Monday papers").
The performances are excellent throughout. Though the tour started out with Vinnie Zummo on guitar, Tom Teeley steps in and does a marvelous job; if you weren't aware of the mid-tour personnel change, you wouldn't even notice (and probably won't anyway - I don't, and I was at one of the earlier shows).
Overall, the DVD is pretty good, but two areas are in significant need of improvement. (1) The picture quality could be much better; lots of blockiness is evident in the darker areas of the screen, and is often distracting. (2) The audio could also be better. The PCM tracks are a bit harsh-sounding, and listening fatigue is likely should you have the volume cranked up at first; some of the upper midrange frequencies should have been attenuated slightly for a slightly warmer mix. The Dolby 2.0 tracks have a better overall sound, but the mix lacks the definition of the PCM tracks.
It's too bad that A&M/Universal didn't get the VideoArts Japan folks (who originally produced the video in the first place) to handle the DVD transfer; the results would have been much better.
On the other hand, for just a little bit more than the price of a CD, you get just under two hours of a fine concert by an often-overlooked artist. From that perspective, this disc shouldn't be missed. But don't get rid of that VHS copy just yet.

Zucchero: Zu and Co - Live At the Royal Albert Hall (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Since I have had this DVD, I have watched it multiple times. I have put it on my iPod and play it on speakers so I can listen to it. I play it in the car, at home, and at work. Think I am obsessed? Possessed? Oh, yeah. His voice is magic, and his writing talent is amazing. He has great backup with Lisa (Sister) Hunt and Elaine Jackson. His musicians have been with him for a long time. Don't miss the "behind the scenes" interview with him. It gives you a whole new perspective of the man, as well as perhaps an understanding of why he is called "Sugar". This is even not mentioning his outstanding guests: Sting, Brian May, Paul Young, Dolores O'Riordan, Ronan Keating, and Pavarotti among others. You can't go wrong.

Memories (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm still pretty new to this wide new world of anime, so I can't really compare Memories to other works in the genre. I can say that it is a most interesting and impressive production made up of three very different short films from some of the leading names in anime. I don't think the visuals are quite as dazzling as that of more recent anime films, but the artistry of these three episodes certainly does help define the very different worlds in which the action takes place and demonstrates the compelling, visceral powers of anime. We have the celebrated Katsuhiro Otomo to thank for this project; each of the three films, if I'm not mistaken, was adapted from a short manga piece in Otomo's graphic novel Memories.
Episode One is Magnetic Rose, directed by Koji Morimoto of Animatrix fame. This is a beautiful, haunting tale of a most unusual space rescue mission. The crew of a space garbage collection ship responds to a distress signal from a dead part of space. Two crew members board the debris-shrouded vessel and enter a completely different world, one fueled by the memories of a beautiful young opera singer who apparently retreated to the isolation of space following a tragedy in her life. I won't pretend to have understood every thing about this story, but it is wholly captivating. The men encounter lavish rooms including opera houses and living quarters fit for a princess, holograms and other visual artifacts of "the young Madam" Eva entertaining guests and audiences, and decayed artifacts that sometimes come to life in front of their eyes. Each man is soon drawn into the vivid, colorful world of Eva's memories, but only one recognizes the unreality behind the vivid scenes he encounters - in his case, though, memories of his own wife and child serve as fuel for the increasingly realistic episodes he experiences. Much of the story takes place to a soundtrack of beautiful opera music such as that of Puccini, and the combination of such grand music and the amazing visual miracles that define anime of the highest caliber make this a most powerful film indeed.
Episode Two, Stink Bomb from director Tensai Okamura, goes in a completely different direction. Existing in some nebulous space between dark comedy and grim political satire, Stink Bomb is certainly entertaining but much less powerful than the other two films. In this story, a young scientific researcher takes an experimental fever pill that turns out to be something else entirely. He awakes to find everyone in the building comatose or dead (it's never really clear to me), and panicked company executives order him to find the pills and the secret documentation related to them so that he can bring everything to them in Tokyo immediately. He does just that, but he comes across death and destruction everywhere he goes. He does not understand that he has become a biological weapon emanating deadly gas from within his own body. It's almost comical to see the military firepower brought to bear - quite fruitlessly - against him as the military seeks to stop the spread of the noxious gas. The ending is also somewhat comical, on a dark level.
The last and shortest of the films comes from Katsuhiro Otomo himself. Cannon Fodder is an extremely dark film that vividly portrays a day in the life of a militaristic society along the lines of a post-modern day Prussia (i.e., pointy helmets are big in this world) dedicated solely and completely to the continued firing of gigantic cannons against some nebulous enemy. The obvious interpretation is one of the insanity of warfare, and the dark tones and grimly drawn characters bring the message home in a powerful fashion. Interestingly, the entire action seems to consist of one continuous shot that moves fluidly from one scene to another.
Memories dates back to 1995, but it is certainly an impressive example of anime's unique strengths and possibilities. The music, I should mention, plays an integral role in each film, especially Magnetic Rose - I think this DVD is worth owning just for this first amazing film alone. Otomo, Morimoto, and Okamuro are the same masters of anime who gave the world such wonders as Akira, Animatrix, and Ghost in the Shell, so anime newbies can rest assured that Memories will not disappoint.

Petula Clark - At The Turn Of The Year (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)I have always enjoyed Petula Clark since her introduction into the States with "Downtown". "Don't Sleep In The Subway" is my all time favorite. Neither are included in this concert. About 40% of the music is more of an MTV video musical rather than an actual concert. If that is the way the "Concert" was actually aired on the BBC New Year's Eve I think that should have been mentioned.
I would give less than 4 stars except that the actual portions of the concert are so brilliant that I can't.
If you want to see Petula at her best live, even if it is a brief glimpse, this has some great moments.
Someday I hope someone will release the entire concert. If they do I'll buy it.

This solo recital at La Scala finds Marilyn Horne in top form and presents a good case for her christening as the greatest singer of her generation. She is a cute short thing (only about 5'2"), but sounds like a 6' tall Amazon whose agility can give a cheetah a good run for an antelope dinner. She is especially thrilling in virtuoso rage arias (the Handel, Rossini, and Donizetti numbers).
All the songs are well to extremely well sung, though the most haunting for me are the English language ones... especially the final two encores by Stephen Foster. It isn't that her diction in other language is faulty, but that when she sings in English she really gets into the songs more and turns them into stories (in other languages she is mainly singing a song very musically).
Martin Katz is also a marvelous partner from the piano. A one man orchestra who really excels in showcasing Horne's singing. He is very expressive without drawing attention to himself.
All in all, it a great recital DVD... and I dare say a must have for any lover of the operatic mezzo-soprano voice. All songs are sung in original language with optional subtitle in: English, German, French, Italian.

(More customer reviews)If you are an Aznavour fan, this is a must have. I have 4 Aznavour concert dvds and I think this is the best one available. The sound is good and he is in good voice and form. He does most of his classic songs in various languages (French, English and Spanish) and includes some new ones. I am so happy to have this record of his performance. A couple of times a year, I get out the champagne and watch this video.

Emmylou Harris - Spyboy Live (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)If you're a fan of Emmylou Harris (and you probably are if you're reading this), then get this. Nothing more needs to be said other than it's essential for EH fans.
The performance here is much better than the live recordings put together for the "Spyboy" CD. This entire DVD is from one show at the Exit/In in Nashville, while the audio CD is a collection of performances from the "Wrecking Ball" worldwide tour. The songs sound much better here, and the band sounds much better here than on the CD (and when I saw them in Atlanta in 10/2000). The CD doesn't have the greatest sound (I get the feeling I'm in the very very back of a large auditorium), but the DVD is just great. And, yes, it could/should have been much longer. But I won't penalize it for that.
This is a must for EH fans. If only to see/hear the tearjerking performances of "Prayer In Open D", "My Songbird", and "Calling My Children Home"; but it's all great.

(More customer reviews)I just loved this DVD. I really enjoyed the live performances and the behind the scenes stuff. I definitely agree with a lot of the reviewers out there, this DVD does tell you more about Edwin and does show his sense of humor. I really want to see him live sometime. The only disappointment I had is I wish there were more music videos on there, but all the other things that were on the DVD made up for that for the most part. Overall, an enjoyable DVD.

Michael Nesmith - Live at the Britt (1992) Review

I decided to buy this DVD because I had two of Nesmith's older albums (Tantamount to Treason and Nevada Fighter) on vinyl, and really, really liked them, but I had not kept up with 'Nez for a long time, and had never seen him in concert. In the last few months, I've probably watched/listened to this disc over twenty times or so. I copied it onto an audio tape so that I can listen to it in the car. Since then, I've bought ALL the rest of his albums on CD. And love them. But nothing is better than LIVE AT THE BRITT. Rather than fading with age, he has really grown as an artist over the years. His live versions of "Joanne", "Silver Moon" are far superior to the much earlier, studio versions. The BRITT versions are slower and more soulful. To this day, I have trouble singing along with "Moon Over the Rio Grande", because it still raises a lump in my throat. If you have any fond memories of traditional Western music as performed by the Sons of the Pioneers, you will love this cut! The concert is punctuated by 'Nez's self-effacing humor. The tunes are all his. The backing band is outstanding! John Hobbs (keyboard), John Jorgensen (lead guitar and mandolin), and the late, great Red Rhodes (steel guitar) are all multiple award-winning instrumentalists. Joe Chemay (bass guitar) and Luis Conte (Percussion) fit in perfectly with this group to make beautiful music. It's obvious that they've played together for years, especially 'Nez and Red.
'Nez is country, country-rock, folk, rock, acoustic pop and all of the above, but it doesn't matter. Those are just categories that this artist spans. He is my favorite singer/songwriter. The fact that he "changes styles like he changes his socks", just makes it more interesting. But be warned! If you watch LIVE AT THE BRITT more than a couple of time, it will make you want more! Luckily, his albums are all available on CD. And don't forget to buy the DVD version of ELEPHANT PARTS. Besides pioneering country rock, 'Nez also invented MTV. (No joke)
