It's hard to write about this Covent Garden production without comparing it to the Teatro Carlo Felice production from 2005 which is also on DVD and features Juan Diego Florez. (In fact, both productions are updated to one of our 20th Century "World Wars," this one to WWI, the Teatro Carlo Felice production to WWII.) So, I'll compare the two since some readers may just want to buy one of them. I gave the other five stars and this one four, but I wouldn't make the choice on that basis alone. If you want to see what played at The Met in the spring of 2008, or if Natalie Dessay is one of your favorite performers, this is the DVD to buy.
Juan Diego Florez sings spectacularly in both productions. In this production, he does not encore "Ah, mes amis," so you'll have to do with just nine of his thrillingly precise high C's. However, I think he's more relaxed at Covent Garden, having added two years to his onstage experience.
Patrizia Ciofi of the Teatro Carlo Felice production cannot compete with Natalie Dessay as a comic actress. Beverly Sills called the role of Marie, "Lucille Ball with high notes." That describes Dessay's performance perfectly. Her high notes are indeed the highlight of her singing and her comic antics are a delight to watch. As I wrote in my review of the Teatro Carlo Felice production, Ciofi is not a natural comedienne. But, in my opinion, Ciofi has the superior voice; it is fuller, more varied in tone and more textured. She creates a more operatic Marie.
The Teatro Carlo Felice production gives the relationship between Sulpice and the Marquise a flirtatious turn. It adds a lot to their otherwise rather dull roles (dull compared to other supporting roles in Donizetti comedies, such as Dr. Dulcamara and Giannetta in "L'Elisir d'Amore").
Finally, the Teatro Carlo Felice production comes with a second DVD devoted to behind-the-scenes material that is as good as it gets. (I describe it in detail in my review of the Teatro Carlo Felice production.)
There are several reasons you might prefer this production to the Teatro Carlo Felice of 2005 even though I think the other is of higher quality overall. First, the Covent Garden production is the same production and the same cast (except for the speaking role of the Duchess of Crackentorp) that played at The Met this spring and was shown in movie theaters around the world. So, if you want to see that Met production, this is the DVD to buy. (Of course, Covent Garden features a different chorus, orchestra, and conductor.) Secondly, if you love Natalie Dessay, I recommend this production over Teatro Carlo Felice.
I thought the Teatro Carlo Felice production had more to offer: the encored "Ah, mes amis," the superior singing of Patrizia Ciofi, the delightful relationship that develops between Sulpice and the Marquise, and finally, that bonus DVD. You can't go wrong with either production.

Dion: Live in Concert Review

Dion: Live in Concert

This is great, to watch Dion perform. He sounds as good as ever just as he did on last years "New Masters" CD which featured new versions of his hits. Filmed at the Tropica in Atlantic City, Dion performs with gusto his hits taking us on a musical journey of both nostalgia and musical history; his history and also of rock; where it came from and what it meant to him and how, to a certain extent, it applies today. Interspersed between some of the concert footage, he talks about his roots and it's fascinating to hear him talk about how Hank Williams, black music, and Jewish cantering played a role in what he did. Something I found interesting was how some of his vocal emanations came from saxaphone players he heard in theatres. Besides the main concert, there's a separate section which has Dion filmed while sitting on a stool talking about his music and singing in an accoustic setting. If he had done all his songs this way, it'd be a great buy. In this section he talks about Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens and why he didn't take the airplane in which they died along with The Big Bopper. The only downside to this dvd are the so called celebrity testimonials which consist only of written words from Lou Reed, Waylon Jennings and others that are hard to read or near impossible to read. I had expected live interviews. But that aside, this is a blast. The concert list: Walking Blues (accoustic studio), I Wonder Why, I Let My Baby Do That, Ruby Baby (collage including American Bandstand version), Amazing Grace/Love Came To Me, Drip Drop, Ride With You (accoustic studio), A Teenager In Love, Blue Monday, The Truth Will Set You Free (Accoustic studio), King Of The New York Streets, Abraham Martin and John, Donna The Prima Donna, Runaround Sue, The Wanderer (we find out who he really was).

Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band - Blood Brothers (1996) Review

Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band - Blood Brothers (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Since it was nearly seven years since the last time the E Street Band and Bruce Springsteen played together during the Tunnel of Love and the Amnesty International tours, their coming together in 1995 was a fans dream.
The band members had become more adept at playing their instruments, they had matured some, and it comes out in the numerous renditions of Blood Brothers and Secret Garden (which would be later used in the movie Jerry Maguire) that we get to eavesdrop on like a fly on the wall in the studio.
The E Streeters do an awesome job with Murder Incorporated, a song they'd used for years in concerts, just had never released on an album before.
And when they finally get to This Hard Land, it's Springsteen at his purist; no politics, no agenda, just people and good hard rock and roll.
As a fan I'd cheer the Boss if he did nothing more than sit in a chair with an acoustic guitar and sing for an hour, but what you've got here is 90 minutes worth of behind the scenes goings on, and it's well worth the money.
And if you never have, make sure you go to a concert if you ever have the chance. You'll never forget it.

Celia the Queen (2009) Review

Celia the Queen (2009)

I've been waiting for this documentary to be made every since
her passing from brain cancer in 2003.
There was another one which I owned briefly that seemed pretty
good except it was all in spanish with no subtitles, so I regretfully
had to return it. But this one I saw tonight for the first time on PBS
and thought that it was fantastic!
Celia Cruz was and is forever an icon & worldwide
ambassador of salsa music, love, understanding and afro-caribbean culture in general!
Her rallying cry...AZUCAR!!--Was known by all who loved her amazing voice,
flamboyant & joyful personality as well as her huge infectious spirit throughout
her unprecedented 50 yr career!
Her voice was rich, deep, emotive and carried in it all the wisdom, joy, pain & ethos
of the african-cuban and carribean experience which she had lived in earnest!
I liken her to great african-american artists of the past like
Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, etc., in that she
transcended just her music and was something much more on the world stage!
Like the aforementioned artists, Celia Cruz's music, voice, and personality
got down deep inside your soul irregardless of your race, language, socio-economic
background or education level!--Her funeral, like the funerals of Ella, Louis & Mahalia,
was attended by heads of state, her peers within the entertainment industry,
and of course her devoted fans, who filed past her open coffin in both Miami & New York City
100,000 strong to show their love for their "La Reina", who was such an integral part
of their lives!--Again, this is a must-have DVD for Celia Cruz fans and worth every dollar!
Rest In Peace Forever Celia "La Reina" Cruz!!---(October 21, 1925 - July 16, 2003)

Of all the bio's or rememberance documentaries done on an artist, I have to say this was the best of all that I've seen! It was very insightful covering what inspired John to write certain songs, what was happening in his life during the times he was writing them, and gave a well rounded perspective of his life and career taken from his own narratives as well as those who knew him personally or worked with him through the years. A definite "Must have" for any John Denver fan!!!

Nana Mouskouri: Live at Herod Atticus - 20th Anniversary Edition Review

Nana Mouskouri: Live at Herod Atticus - 20th Anniversary Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I rarely view a video/movie more than once. In my 58 years, I have viewed less than ten videos three times. That said, I've viewed this Nana Mouskouri concert in excess of 15 times (in both VHS and DVD formats combined) and I'm sure I'll view it many more times in the future.
IMHO, Nana Mouskouri possesses the most beautiful female voice ever recorded. I am an avid music lover and own a little over 5,000 albums (LPs and CDs combined). Although my collection includes recordings by about 200 female vocalists, I own more recordings by Nana Mouskouri than by any other artist or group---about 60 albums worth. This DVD and the CD recording of it (which contains two concert songs omitted from the DVD and the unabbreviated instrumental introduction) rank at the top of my Nana Mouskouri collection.
This concert was videotaped in 1984 when Nana's voice was still in peak form. The concert (actually one of five concerts given on five consecutive evenings) was performed in one of the world's most beautiful concert settings---the 5,000 seat Roman amphitheater of Herod Atticus located at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens.
Although the video quality may leave a bit to be desired by today's standards, the audio recording (engineered by the Rolling Stone's Mobile Sound Unit) is of audiophile quality. Except for one song ("Ave Maria") where Nana slowly weans herself away from the microphone to sing unamplified, none of the songs appear to have had any compression applied. The dynamic range of the recording is awesome.
To put it mildly, Nana Mouskouri is a very classy woman. She exudes a charisma on stage that is hard to describe. She can be mesmerizing (as in her passionate delivery of "Kathe Trello Pedi"). She has performed about 200 concerts per year every year since around 1960. In this concert both she and her superb band are in top form. I have studio versions of most of the songs sung in this concert. For many of them, this concert version is the definitive version. The double CD of this concert went double platinum in Greece and became the best selling album of the year in 1986.

This concert is almost as much about the music of the great Manos Hadjidakis as it is about the voice of Nana Mouskouri. Of the 26 songs Nana sings, 22 are in Greek. Of those 22 Greek songs, 17 were composed by Hadjidakis. This is not because there was any paucity of good Greek music from which to choose. It's because Hadjidakis' music is so incredibly beautiful. (Around 1959 Hadjidakis stated that in Nana Mouskouri he had found "...the perfect vehicle for my music" and began composing with Nana's voice specifically in mind.) This concert contains some of the most beautiful Greek songs ever written.
The gentleman from South Africa is not exaggerating---Nana's voice can send shivers down your spine. Her mezzo soprano voice is effortlessly smooth as silk. Coupled with her fluency in five languages, her classical training, and daily vocal exercises spanning over 45 years, she sings exquisitely in almost any genre. Although hardly known in the United States, she is, by far, the top selling female recording artist of all time.
The DVD's only shortcoming is its brevity. Nana's concerts last at least 2-1/2 hours. This concert was filmed for Greek national television and was therefore edited down to 90-minutes. However, the six bonus music videos (filmed in famous Greek locations in 2002 for German television) help make up for this.
One word of caution: Buy the Canadian/U.S. version of this DVD, which contains an inner photographic booklet. The foreign versions (including those from Brazil, Argentina, and China) not only omit the booklet, but the sonic quality is inferior in that the exquisite instrumentation is noticably subdued.
Hopefully Universal will one day do a reissue of the entire concert. Until then, you owe it to yourself to experience this performance. View it in conjunction with the best sound system you can get your hands on. Set Nana's first words to a realistic sound level, and don't touch the volume control again. You won't be disappointed!

The video tape of "Live In Detroit" will make you want to get your praise on! This video tape has over ninety minutes of soul-stirring gospel music from the diva of gospel music, Vickie Winans! This is because she allows the anointing to come into the house. Ms. Vickie Winans also shows her comedial side by telling her life experiences. The video will bring you to tears with the bonus song "Who Knows". I wish I attended this concert that was recorded live. There is no text referring to how many video's are on this ALAN JACKSON GREATEST HITS 2 DVD, (or which ones for that matter). 6, Yes that's it, 6. You might think that all the video's that were made of the songs on the CD would be on this DVD.Nope.
(The cover art on the DVD and CD are the same, somewhat misleading).
The video's include 1-It's Five O'Clock Somewhere. 2-I'll Go On Loving You. 3-Little Bitty. 4-It's Alright To Be A Redneck (which isn't on the CD). 5-When Somebody Loves You. 6-Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning).
Where are the video's for DRIVE (FOR DADDY GENE), WWW.MEMORY, WHO'S CHEATIN' WHO? Or any of the others. True this is a low price, however I still feel cheated. I would have been willing to pay more to have all the video's since the 1st GREATEST HITS COLLECTION. Which is another DVD I would like to see out, (providing all the songs will be included like the VHS version).

I never really listened to Tina Turner except on the radio but one day I decided to watch What's Love Got To Do With It and I was absolutly blown away. The power and feeling Angela Bassett put into her character as Tina Turner was so convincing I actually started to believe it was the true superstar, not just an actress. Laurence Fishburne is an incrediable actor and he did a wonderful job portraying Ike Turner, to the point where I wanted to reach inside the television screen and hurt him as much as he was hurting Tina. He was so good being bad I can't believe he never won an Oscar for this incrediable role. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is a big Tina Turner fan or anyone who just want's to watch a very powerful and emotional film, full of extremly talented actors and actresses. May God always be with Tina Turner after the Hell on Earth she went through, thanks to Ike Turner.

Liza with a 'Z' - Concert for Television (Collector's Edition) (1972) Review

Liza with a 'Z' - Concert for Television (Collector's Edition) (1972)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This "Concert for Television" from 1972 has been beautifully restored, in a DVD package that has lots of extras, and will delight all of Liza's fans, as well as those who admire choreographer/director Bob Fosse. Liza's natural sensuality fits into Fosse's unique (and difficult to master) choreography as if she was born to dance it, and she is one of the best interpreters of his work, which is no easy feat. Liza is fantastic in this concert, with her one-of-a-kind talent shining in every number. With 4 (Halston) costume changes, the show has sections of solo "spotlight" songs, and several production numbers where she is joined by some superb backup dancers, who unfortunately have not been given credit...my only other complaint is that with the running time of 1 hour, one wants more of this terrific multi award winning show! Those who enjoy this concert will also like the 1992 concert with Charles Aznavour at the Palais des Congres available on DVD.
The songs are:
1: "Yes," from the Kander & Ebb show "70, Girls, 70."
2: "God Bless the Child," a marvelous take on the Billie Holiday classic.
3: "Say Liza," a novelty John Kander number and the show's title song.
4: "It Was a Good Time," a touching song where Liza gets to use her acting talent.
5: "I Gottcha," the first of 3 production numbers, with Liza in a red micro mini.
6: "Son of a Preacher Man."
7: "Ring Them Bells" is very amusing with Liza having to travel to Europe to meet the boy next door.
8: "Bye Bye Blackbird," the standout number for choreography, staging and performance. Liza dazzles in black velvet!
9: "You've Let Yourself Go," Charles Aznavour's mature love song, and few can sing Aznavour like Liza.
10: "My Mammy," wonderful!
11: "Cabaret" medley ("Wilkommen," "Married," "Money," "Maybe this Time," "Cabaret"). What can you say...Liza IS Sally Bowles!
12: Curtain calls and titles.

With all her recent misadventures, it's hard to remember that Liza Minelli was once a startlingly impressive stage performer, following in her mother's footsteps (Judy Garland, for those that haven't been paying attention). This made for TV concert from 1972 shines the spotlight on Liza at her peak, with songs by Kander & Ebb and choreography by Bob Fosse. Forget everything else; all you need to know and remember about Liza Minelli is right here.

Bill Champlin: In Concert Review

Bill Champlin: In Concert

Bill Champlin has been a favorite of mine for over 30 years and, after being eclipsed by lesser light pop stars, finally seems to be gaining the recognition he's deserved for so long. Hype, flashy wardrobe and heavily-publicized bizarre behavior often deflects media attention away from the efforts of humble but more talented musical artists. Chicago pulled a real coup when they recruited him but, in my opinion, Bill shines best at the helm of his own musical endeavors, either as a solo artist or fronting the Sons of Champlin. This DVD features Bill in a performance environment he seems completely at home with. The sound is good and the sidemen are exceptional. I don't think many Bill Champlin fans would be disappointed owning this DVD.

Judy Garland Live at the London Palladium with Liza Minnelli (1963) Review

Judy Garland Live at the London Palladium with Liza Minnelli (1963)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wary as I was of all the so-so and downright negative reviews of this DVD that I've seen strewn about the Web, it was with some reluctance that I bought it from Amazon.
I am deligted to be able to tell you all now to utterly disregard the criticisms, the complaints and the heckling - "Judy Garland Live at the London Palladium with Liza Minnelli" is, in my opinion, one of the best live concert DVDs I have ever seen.
Judy is older, more tired, and in noticably less voice than in previous outings. Liza is sometimes over-ambitious in her range and a shade on the awkward side. The DVD quality is blurry and jerky, and the sound quality, although you can hear pretty much everything perfectly well, is not as good as it could have been.
For all of that, though, the absolute and indefinable screen magic and stage presence that radiates from two of the world's most legendary entertainers is more than palpable here - it's real, heartfelt and honest. Judy and Liza seem both enamoured of and slightly overawed by each other, and their shared medleys and duets (which comprise most of the track listings) are breathtaking. Liza more than holds her own with her opening number "Gypsy In My Soul", and in terms of sheer enjoyment, their rendition of the classic "Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again" beats the Garland-Streisand version hands down.
An absolute and unequivocal must for fans of showbusiness, broadway, craftsmanship in music or either of these two indisputable treasures, "Judy Garland Live at the London Palladium with Liza Minnelli" is an outstanding testament to the power of talent.
To be owned and enjoyed immediately!

Sweet Dreams (1985) Review

Sweet Dreams (1985)

This movie, featuring great performances by Jessica Lange as Patsy Cline, and Ed Harris as Charley Dick, Cline's husband, chronicles the life and times of Patsy Cline, her rise to stardom, and her all too brief hold on it.
Jessica Lange gives a wonderful, believable performance as Patsy Cline. Ed Harris, as her hard drinking, womanizing, and ultimately abusive husband, plays his role to perfection. John Goodman has a small role in the film as Charley Dick's good ol' boy, meat head friend.
The movie shows how this poorly educated, young woman with a throaty and achingly rich voice went on to become one of the greatest crossover talents ever to come out of Nashville. Her flame burned brightly for several years, until it was extinguished when a plane in which she was a passenger crashed headlong into a mountain.
Her music runs throughout the entire film. If you are not a Patsy Cline fan when you first sit down to view this film, then you surely will be by the time you finish doing so. No one sang with more feeling than Patsy Cline, and she evidently lived her life the same way. This is a terrific movie and well worth watching!

...as I never expected to find it here--first off, the music: the only other group I can seem to remotely compare this one to is Alice Cooper when it was a group before it turned into a solo vehicle for Vincent Furnier to espouse his Christian morality tales (I'm talking about the orginal members, in their glory, from the "Love It To Death" to the "Muscle Of Love" period, Turbonegro's lead singer has even co-opted Alice's eye makeup!)--the members of Turbonegro has classified their music as deathpunk, but you can forget that, this music is full of life and seems to me to be preoccupied with sexual deviancy, not that there's anything wrong with that! Now, my disappointments, about which caused me to subtract a star: first, I was led to believe from other web sites and reviews that there would be some promo videos included, which there weren't, altho there is an hour-long documentary about the group's comeback in 2003 after breaking up in 1998, then an hour or so long concert from the start of their comeback tour, two different and individual concert videos and two short films; second, the documentary removes a lot of the mystique surrounding the band, so be forewarned--however, where I got my inspiration from was the documentary itself, so without giving anything away, I'll say that the film concerns what happened after the lead singer had his drug-induced meltdown and how he found the strength and support from his band members and family to return to what he loved, which is playing some hard-core rock and roll; I'll tell you, after watching countless "Behind The Music"'s where bands with lesser spirit and plain old guts blew apart and never spoke to each other again, this film is a literal revelation--as far as I'm concerned after watching this documentary (which includes two complete concert performances), this is a downright revelation and could act as a learning experience for rock bands starting out--so, although I didn't get my precious MTV videos, I ended up getting a whole lot more...

The Stooge (1952) Review

The Stooge (1952)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While I applaud Paramount's decision to finally start releasing some of their older titles, I have to wonder how serious they are when they release only one disc from one of their most successful comedy teams' films, at the same time they're dumping most of the Jerry Lewis catalogue on the market.(And I'm not ragging on Jerry. I think Jerry's great, though it may not be cool to admit it, I'm proudly out of the closet on this issue. But even Jerry admits that he was never as good as when he was with Dean) So the question is how do you have a Martin & Lewis "Collection" with only one movie?
Don't get me wrong, it's a good one. The Stooge is their 7th outing and, unlike the previous films, has some character development and a certain edge. Dino plays Bill Miller a Vaudeville Entertainer whose partner has just quit on him. After an abortive attempt at a solo act, his agent (the dependable Eddy Mayehoff)convinces him to find a patsy to plant in the Audience that Bill can mock. Enter Jerry as the titular Stooge also known as Ted Rogers. Turns out Ted is funny just being himself and the Act is a Smash. But Bill is something of an egomaniac and decides that he himself is responsible for his new found success, and refuses to acknowledge Ted's contribution, or even give him billing. In the end Bill gets a lesson in humility, and we get treated to something that looks a lot like what the Martin and Lewis famous nightclub act may have been. All too brief...
Dino doesn't try to be likable, and gives a performance with hints of the fine dramatic actor he would become. Jerry cements the nebbish, but gives him humanity this time. Polly Bergen is fine as Bill's Show Biz Wife, who has given up her own career. She and Dean do a nice duet on the pleasant but annoying "A Girl called Mary". The other song that will never leave your brain ,once you hear it, is "Who's yer little Whozits". I recommend humming "Lady of Spain" or "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini". If those don't work, try a .45.

Universal put out the 24 Abbott and Costello Films in three sets for reasonable prices. Hope and Crosby are out for a similar price. The Marx Bros., W.C. Fields all have collections coming out for affordable cost. So why not Martin & Lewis? I'm just askin'. And by the way, just who is yer little whozits?
