And here it is now, a little heard of British film, "Psyche 59" starring Patricia Neal, Curt Jurgens, Ian Bannen and Samantha Eggar as part of the Columbia Classics By Request. I think this film introduced Ms. Eggar to the screen. It is late at night and after watching this quirky film, I couldn't sleep, so here with a cup of peppermint tea, I will try to get the film out of my mind. It is full of unusual images and symbolism for a 1964 black and white film that the British so mastered in the sixties and the music is eerie and compliments the images right to the Columbia Pictures logo at the end, strangely bringing the film into your psyche. Ms. Neal, direct from winning an Oscar for 1963's "Hud" has become blind and remains so for no apparent physical reason except she doesn't want to see something and can't quite put her finger on it. I don't think Samantha has been used quite like this again as she is seen with black underwear and garters and bikinis and tight fitting capri pants and looks very sexy as Patricia Neal's younger sister. Ian Bannen has never looked better. There really isn't much to give away, but I wouldn't want to do that, so enough of the plot. The art director's choices for the art and bric a brac and the curious astrological and sci-fi interests of their grandmother (played by Beatrix Lehman) add to the effect the film has, perhaps why the author of the book it is based on titled it such a thing as "Psyche 59" (by Francoise des Ligneris). Then again it might have been originally written in 1959 and took some time to get to the screen. The screenplay is by Julian Halevy (pseudonym for blacklisted writer Julian Zimet) and was directed by Alexander Singer. And in the end, it all adds up to a strangely rewarding experience, some of it quite beautiful. I'll want to watch it again. Thank you, Columbia Classics, for making it available. It is worth seeing. And not easy to forget.
