Music: "Hey, this doesn't sound like Brazilian music." Well, it does but it isn't samba or bossa nova. Tribalista scooped a Latin Grammy and sold by the millions in Brazil and Europe. This documentary dvd follows the creation of a megahit by drum god Carlinhos Brown, diva Marisa Monte and poet-rocker Arnoldo Antunes. There's a tremendous amount to be learned from this dvd which covers rehearsals and all tracks from the cd.
Drumming: Quadruple threat -- percussionista, singer, songwriter and magnetic dancer/performer Brown puts himself at the service of the songs with tasty tender restraint. (For monster drum chops check his latest cd, Carlito Marron, a hip fusion of Brazilian, African and Cuban influences all filtered through the brain of Carlinhos!) Along with his arsenal of percussion toys his main axe is a set of brushes played on everything from ago-go bell, tin bucket, bongos, shakers to snare.
Verdict: Weirdly beautiful songs that you'll listen to again and again!

On a personal note, as a percussionist, this is the most inspiring documentation of musical creativity I have ever seen. I guess the reviewer who thought the video was too dark and missed seeing the musicians made up and lit for video would rather watch constructed music videos. Obviously the filmmaker was staying out of the way of the music being made. Totally, totally brilliant.
