David Broza's sunset to sunrise concert at Masada is electrifying. Usually, PBS fundraiser concerts are dreadfully dull (think of the generic New Age Celtic Woman or the mulleted Andre Rieu),but this one engrossed me. David Broza has been compared to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, but he outshines them. He sings an enchanting mix of Hebrew and English songs. His voice is as soothing as delicious halvah. He plays spicy flamenco songs, as well as a plea for peace with Shawn Colvin and Jackson Browne. Broza also plays a trancey,trip-hop spiritual song with a Palestinian singer and a children's choir. David Broza's "Masada Live" is a journey worth making. It's a musical oasis in the ancient desert fortress. "Masada Live" skillfully weaves together the ancient and the new, as spicy as za'atar and as hearty as a felafel.
