I work with an American singer and Oldies star named Fabian and one night went hunting on youtube for any current clips of his. By this odd path I've encountered a Belgian woman who's almost literally taken my breath away.
Let me first say that I can't stand the false, Las Vegas, poorly overacted hystrionics of Celine Dion and her contemporaries. Watching her is for me like chewing on tin foil. The most impressive aspect of this DVD is Ms. Fabian's inate ability to present a deeply dramatic performance without for a second it seeming posed or premeditated. When her voice flies you're convinced that it's the sound of her torn heart and not sixteen vocal coaches and agents.
Except for one song Ms. Fabian sings in French but don't let that deter you from the experience - her intensity and manner of delivery is such that you somehow seem to understand the words. And as the title says it's truly an intimate evening - she performs most of the concert in a beautiful silk nightgown which instead of (or not only) lending a physical intimacy to the affair simply amplifies the fragility of her heart and the baring of her soul to you.
Ms. Fabian is accompanied by an exceptional pianist, a small string ensemble, a bare stage and minimal lighting... and it works. The sound is flawless, the camerawork is slow and steady and respectful (instead of the aggravating MTV style of two second shots upon one second shots.)
I now don't know whether I want to avoid romance at all costs or go find the perfect woman and fall for her deeply... preferably in Paris... but I do expect that I'll never forget this DVD.
