George Jones - Same Ole Me (1969)

several of George's peers/fans give their stories and experiences with George through both the good and bad times. Buck Owens recounts the time he and George argued over top billing and what George did when Buck didn't give in and let George close the show. Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Costello {!?} also appear. Obviously, Waylon and Cash's stories are about the "bad days". Tom T. Hall, one of the many prolific songwriters in Nashville to supply George with material, appears with a story about him and George in Canada and how George wanted to do something exciting and wanted Tom to go along. Tom refused and remained "on tour" while George ran off somewhere. Tom tells us that the next day he heard that George had ended up kicking the windows out of a hospital in Las Vegas. Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Randy Travis, Ricky Skaggs, Ricky Van Shelton, June Carter Cash, and Roy Acuff also appear giving praise and admiration to George. Sprinkled through all of this is George {circa 1989} giving commentary. also heard is an off-camera announcer giving biographical information. Clips of him performing some of his songs are also shown. He tells us what he felt of his marriage to Tammy and how upset he is that they never won any awards together. Nancy is also featured on the video as is Rick Blackburn, Billy Sherrill, and George's sister and her husband. Blackburn's story is about the time George never shown up at a huge concert in New York and he says from that point foward he started to become known as "No Show Jones". Sherrill talks about the long process of recording "He Stopped Loving Her Today" and how the first two verses were recorded nearly a year before the start of the recitation because George hated to be in the studio. It truly is a remarkable look into the life of George Jones...in all it's ups and downs. The documentary runs from his birth, child-hood, all through his career but stops somewhere in the late '80s {the video arrived in 1989}. Who would know an artist of his stature THEN would STILL be making news and hitting the charts in the next decade that followed!! This is why i call my review: The life story up to 1989.

Phantom of the Opera (Universal Studios Classic Monster Collection) (1943) Review

Phantom of the Opera (Universal Studios Classic Monster Collection) (1943)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This 1943 version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is simply stunning. As other viewers have noted, this version is more colourful musical than bloodcurdling horror (and more in tune with Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical than the Lon Chaney silent).
Claude Rains plays the Phantom. In this version the Phantom is a violinist in the opera's orchestra, trying to get his own music published. Because of arthritis in one of his hands, he gets fired from the orchestra and left virtually destitute. A case of jumping to the wrong conclusion leads him to be severely scarred by acid, and he retreats to the cool and dark of the sewers for refuge.
Susanna Foster plays Christine DuBois, a young singer in the opera chorus, who graduates to the lead roles when the resident diva is murdered by the Phantom. Nelson Eddy plays Anatole, the resident lead baritone who is in love with Christine.
The Technicolor photography is lush and vibrant, superbly reproduced for this DVD. Susanna Foster (and her amazing voice which roams several octaves) is perfectly showcased in the well-executed opera scenes. Also starring Edgar Barrier, J. Edward Bromberg and Jane Farrar.
Followed by THE CLIMAX (which featured Susanna Foster being menaced by Boris Karloff).

This spectacular retelling of Gaston Leroux's immortal horror tale stars Claude Rains as the masked phantom of the Paris opera house - a crazed composer who schemes to make a beautiful young soprano (Susanna Foster) the star of the opera company and wreak revenge on those who stole his music. Nelson Eddy, the heroic baritone, tries to win the affections of Foster as he tracks down the disfigured "monster" who has begun murdering those who resist his mad demands. This lavish production remains a masterpiece not only of the genre, but for all time.

Life with Judy Garland - Me and My Shadows (2001) Review

Life with Judy Garland - Me and My Shadows (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Arguably the single greatest talent to emerge from golden-era Hollywood, Judy Garland continues to fascinate us even more than four decades after her untimely death. As a singer, she was incomparable; as an actress, she was exceptional; as a star, she was perhaps the most brilliant celebrity of her generation. But behind the brillance there was a deeply troubled woman who began her career as a child in the hands of a driven mother and an all-powerful studio, who raced through five husbands, who fought a losing battle with chemical dependency throughout most of her life, and who self-destructed time and time again--only to arise, phoenix-like, from her own ashes over and over again. It was an extraordinary life.
So it should come as no surprise, really, that this three-hour television falls a bit short. Realistically, it would take a talent of Garland's own scope to bring her fully to the screen. But what the film does right, it does extremely, extremely well--and the centerpieces of the film are the remarkable performances of Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis. Both give extraordinary performances. That said, however, both performances are flawed due to the age of the actresses. Blanchard, who plays the teenage Garland, is clearly too old to be thirteen-ish when the film begins; Davis, who plays Garland from her twenties until her death, is clearly too old to be Garland in her twenties.
But so exceptional are the performances that these are actually minor quibbles. When made up for the role and placed in period attire, both Blanchard and Davis have the look to an absolutely uncanny degree. More importantly, they match each other in their skill at playing Garland, who was one of the most uniquely idioscyratic personalities of her era--indeed, Davis has been described by many as having "channeled" Garland, and I certainly wouldn't disagree. And the supporting cast is quite good as well, ranging from above average to extremely good, something of a surprise in a made-for-television movie. Equally impressive is the painstaking recreation of the world in which Garland moved; her wardrobe, both on stage and off, has been meticulously recreated right down to the hat she wore for her wedding to Vincent Minnelli. Be it sets, costumes, or props, the design staff did a truly miraculous job.
But the film falls down in both script and detail. Part of this is due to fact that Lorna Luft's memoir was, naturally enough, based on what her mother told her about her life. Doubtlessly Luft accepted much of this as fact, but Garland was notorious for twisting the truth if it would make a good story--and consequently the film includes several depictions of events that by all other accounts didn't happen that way, assuming they happened at all.
When filming THE WIZARD OF OZ, SHADOWS shows Garland being crowded out of the shot by her co-stars, prompting director Victor Flemming to say "You three dirty hams, let that little girl in there!" It was one of Garland's favorite party stories--but it didn't happen. Garland was well known for her ability to perform complex musical numbers with little rehearsal in a single take, and SHADOWS offers her performance of "The Trolley Song" in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS as an example of her ability to do that--but while she certainly could and often did perform her numbers in a single flawless take, she didn't do it for that particular number. In fact, she mis-mouthed her own vocal play-back during filming, and later had to re-record the vocal as a result. Perhaps the most obvious gaffe in the film is when Garland is found dead in the bathroom of her London apartment; SHADOWS shows her husband going to the bathroom door and seeing her sprawled out on the floor, clearly dead. In reality, the door was locked and he had to climb out on the roof to look in the window--and from her appearance he was unsure of her condition until he actually got into the room.
That aside, the script does a superior job of showing Garland's racy, acid, and often self-mocking sense of humor and her often-hidden powerful sexuality. It also does a fairly good job of displaying her love-hate relationship with her own talent. But it is extremely spotty, skipping over major events and focusing on considerably more trivial incidents. (Garland's first husband, David Rose, is never seen in the film--and indeed, scarcely mentioned at all.) It lacks flow. And were it not for the incredible performances of both Blanchard and Davis, it would often also lack drama--a pretty astonishing thing when one considers how electrically dramatic Garland's life was from day to day. Perhaps most frustrating, the film also has a certain aloofness from its own subject; we observe Garland, but the script itself never really allows us to get inside her.
In the final analysis, ME AND MY SHADOWS is a film that will most greatly appeal to casual viewers or to new Garland fans, for it does show the main outlines of her life and her career. Hardcore fans, however, will be frustrated by its covert inadequacies--and will be quick to spot the numerous moments when the script goes awry. Still, even with its numerous flaws, Blanchard and Davis are exceptional. And I strongly recommend it on that basis.

The remarkable story of Hollywood legend Judy Garland is vividly told in this widely acclaimed film, which features amazing, Emmy Award-winning portrayals by Judy Davis (Best Actress) and Tammy Blanchard (Best Supporting Actress). Loved by millions the world over, Judy was the brightest star in Hollywood's Golden Era. Away from the bright lights and brilliant performances, however, her devotion was to her family. But while she loved her children unconditionally, they could only desperately try and hang on to their mother as a powerful dependence on alcohol and prescription drugs began to consume her life. Based on the book by Garland's daughter Lorna Luft, and honored recipient of 5 Emmy Awards, LIFE WITH JUDY GARLAND: ME AND MY SHADOWS is a deeply moving testament to the healing powers of embracing one's past, facing one's demons, and charting a course of self-discovery!

Marvin Gaye: Live in Belgium 1981 (2006) Review

Marvin Gaye: Live in Belgium 1981 (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As mentioned before in my earlier reviews, Marvin's concert DVDs are true treasures for me as I was very young when he was murdered by his father in 1984. This one is NO exception! Many thanks to the folks at Universal and Reelin' in the Years for yet another exceptional DVD!
This DVD was the bonus to the overseas release of THE REAL THING IN PERFORMANCE 1964-1981. I guess the folks at Universal and Reelin' heard our cries here in America and decided to release this great footage!
This concert was taped in Ostende, Belgium on 4 July 1981 and it shows Marvin at his very best doing what he is remembered for most! His band was super tight and Marvin looks truly amazing!
You can tell by the video how dated it is, but the picture is still clear and the audio is truly amazing!
Includes the 1981 Belgium concert, which includes the songs:
GOT TO GIVE IT UP
COME GET TO THIS
LET'S GET IT ON (including the famous "turn the lights off" rap)
AFTER THE DANCE
IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE
AIN'T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING
AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH
HOW SWEET IT IS (TO BE LOVED BY YOU)
I WANT YOU
INNER CITY BLUES (MAKE ME WANNA HOLLER)
Also includes his appearance on the Belguim television show FOLLLIES 7 May 1981:
I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE (lip-synching to the 1968 hit)
INTERVIEW
HEAVY LOVE AFFAIR (lip-synch, from the 1981 album IN OUR LIFETIME)
Bonus features include:
Original vocal track (a capella) for I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE
Excellent booklet filled with photos and liner notes by Rob Bowman
Truly over the top! A must have to any Motown or Marvin Gaye fan!

Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (2005) Review

Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, Finally it's here, the 5th official live video release from Phil's 6th worldtour as a solo artist (previous releases count the Passadena 1982 video, the Dallas 1985 video, the Berlin 1990 video/2DVD, and the Paris 1997 video/DVD). As such, one cannot quite keep from comparing this release to these former releases, when one wants to make an evaluation of the DVD. This being said, I shall emphasize that if your relatively new into Phil's music, or simply haven't bought the older releases for one reason or another, this is an excellent show, featuring a wide range of his greatest and best loved hits, and giving a very fine overview of how Phil is on stage. Furthermore, you'll have a large amount of extra features thrown in as an added value.
- THE TRACK LISTING -
Perhaps the greatest pro of this release is, that it features the FULL concert. A full 24 tracks are we treated with, which can only be described as generous. The only other complete release so far was the 1990 Serious Hits In Berlin (re-released in 2xDVD last year), and it is always a great frustration to the fans, when one of their favorite songs are cut away in the editing.
Furthermore, the set-list of this tour is quite well-balanced, featuring practically all the greatest, old as well as new - In The Air Tonight, Susudio, One More Night, Dance Into The Light, Another Day In Paradise, Can't Hurry Love, Can't Stop Loving You, and I could go on and on. Of course, a few tracks that I'd love to have seen here are missing - not one track from the Both Sides album - according to Phil his best, and I agree - is included, the title track would have fitted in perfectly; his most recent hit-single from the Brother Bear soundtrack, Look Through My Eyes, is omitted, this soundtrack being represented instead by the ballad No Way Out - which is in fact not a bad treat. I should have loved to have had the piano version of Do You Remember?, as performed on the '97 tour, but of course the line has to be drawn somewhere.
Instead, we are treated with several very pleasant surprises: An absolutely amazing gospel-version of True Colours, far superior to his '98 remake; a lovely version of Come With Me from his recent Testify album, again drawing on his amazing 5-piece of back-up vocalists; an impressive rendition of the gospel-like No Way Out, again using the full power of this vocal potential; and nearly last but not least, another track from the Testify album, It's Not Too Late, another of my favorites, and again presented in a wonderfull new version.
- THE PERFORMANCE -
The performance is, overall, great without being superb. Phil is in good vocal shape, but not as amazing as on the Live And Loose In Paris release from '97. The musicians play amazing, and overall this will probably rank second - after the 97 Paris concert, that was probably Phil's best ever - amongst his live releases. The arrangement is excellent, the upbeat songs are perfomed spotlessly, and the real power of the shw comes with the amazing vocal arrangement on several of the ballads, as mentioned above - True Colours, Come With Me, No Way Out and It's Not Too Late.
Generally, the on-scene performance is pretty dynamic and goes well along with the music - still, the scene doesn't quite give the same space for playing and entertainment as did the circular in-the-round stage used on the '97 tour. The lighting is ok, but I was not impressed - again, comparing with the amazing work on the '97 show, this was a minor let-down.
- SOUND AND FILMING -
The sound is virtually perfect, at least I can't find anything to complain on here. The sound of the music is much more pleasant than on the Berlin '90 show, which was perhaps the greatest weeknes of that show in my oppinion. The filming is excellent as well, the picture quality is great, and I don't miss the multi-camera angles option, which is even included on a few tracks.
- EXTRA FEATURES -
All the videos for the featured songs are included - a generous treat for the fans. Ok, most of the videos are quite mediocre, but still, Phil could've released a seperate video-DVD and ripped the fans of another 20 £. Of course, this is no guarantee that such a release will not come, as the videos of songs not played in the concert are not included. Of course, that should've been nice ... we're talking another 5 or 10 videos here I think.
Some old live-footage is included here, but frankly, this is nothing to go for. The Live Aid Against All Odds performance and the Secret Policeman's Ball In The Air Tonight performance are both in pretty lousy quality, mainly of interest for the serious fans. The 'wild card' features a 20-minutes performance with the Big Band, which never was my taste, so I can hardly appreciate this piece. Instead, there are loads of rare footage not included, that would've been obvious to include: The fantastic Policeman's Ball performance of The Roof Is Leaking, the very rare 1997 performance of The Same Moon with Laura Pausini (not sure whether this was a radio or TV show, this might not have been filmed), the 2002 TV performance of Wake Up Call, and I could go on. Perhaps one day, on future releases, these gems will se the light of day.
Still, these features, and also several documentaries, TV-specials and a gallery, are much more that what've been included on earlier releases, and with a full 224 minutes of extra material (yes, that's nealy 4 hours!), and a 133 minutes live-show, this can only be described as an extremely generous release, and defenitely woth bying, die-hard fan or newcommer.
Overall Rating: 9/10

American Pop (1981) Review

American Pop (1981)
Average Reviews:

As an artist and animation buff, I must say this film is a work of art. I'm not a big Bakshi fan either, I simply can't ignore the truth. There are definitely things about his style that annoy me, like his attraction to larger women, so much that they are practically all he uses. His, ugly yet honest style and his grim though realistic view of society. Honestly, what makes this film look so good is the rotoscoping. Now, I'm not saying every animation studio should take it up, but since most non-Disney animated films are so badly animated maybe it would be for the best. Anyway, the dialogue is great, though some of the protagonists could have been a lot more likable. I'm not saying that storywise this film is pleasant to watch, it's a pretty sad story, and even the victorius ending doesn't alter that. But speaking as someone who has seen tons and tons of animated films, this movie is so beautifully done that you can't take your eyes away from it no matter how depressing and sometimes annoying the story might get. Now I noticed one reviewer calling this film a failure because it was supposed to be a history of music and yet it had a few flaws here and there in its facts. This movie was in no way a failure as to what it set out to do. It was about perseverence, and destiny, and it's lesson about the evolution of music in America was beautifully executed. Don't believe those other reviewers. If you love beautiful animation, dialogue, and dramatic scenes, you'll appreciate this film. Don't buy it as a cartoon babysitter for your little kids though...

I'm not sure what the real 'beach' culture is. But, I know a legend when I see one. And, Bill Pinckney is a true legend. At 78 years old, he tears down the house. He even makes about 4 costume changes. And after all these years the voice is still there. Oh, you're not sure who Bill Pinckney is? Think The Drifters 'White Christmas'. Remember the bass lead? That's Bill Pinckney. Maurice Williams is alright. Remember the Zodiacs? 'Stay'? And he wrote 'Little Darlin'. So, he's got cred. I can't recall the name of the third guy. But, he does have a really good old school voice. And you can see where he's spent a lot of time honing his craft on stage. I did remember his one hit when he did it in the middle of the concert. All in all a very entertaining concert. With the one true legend 'Bill Pinckney'

An East Side Story (1988)

While Marc Anthony is top-billed here, it is clear this movie won't be remembered for him. The dancing in this movie is the real focal point. Unlike the acting and the plot, the dances really do stand out (though you have to get to the latter half of the film to enjoy them). The most unforgettable dance number is Conga, Bongo y Timbal. This number features Iris Chacon, Puerto Rico's inimitable sex symbol. Reported to have measured 36-24-40, she was not shy about wearing bold costumes like the gold "teddy" she uses here. This be-thonged costume showcases her legendary posterior end. Before J.Lo, there was Iris. Though J.Lo was more successful, Iris was clearly more, uh, talented (and a better dancer). Is it coincidence that both women have worked with Marc Anthony? Certainly. In short, if you're a fan of Iris Chacon, this DVD is not to be missed.

It was fun watching these videos--most of them I've never seen, and the rest I haven't seen in a long time. "Sunglasses At Night" is by far the best with its Orwellian tone, and "2 Good 2 Be Enough" (which isn't listed on the outer package for some reason) is a whole lot of fun. The only drawback is that videos like "Angry Young Man" and "Eurasian Eyes," while cinematically well-done, only feature Corey moving about the scenery, with no story and no point, making them somewhat boring. I also wish they had included subtitles on the DVD--I can't understand a lot of the words in "2 Good 2 Be Enough."

Hey Derek,
What DVD were you watching???
The editing was terrific, with lots of interesting camera angles. I especially enjoyed the close shots of Aimee's hands playing the piano on "King of the Jailhouse". And how about her amazing band? I was at this concert, but I don't feel like I 'really' appreciated it until I saw the DVD. You get a whole different perspective when you look at things like the close-up shots of the guitarist going all out on "Long Shot" and the view of the drummer from behind the drum set jamming with the bass player.
Actually, everything about this DVD is first rate. From the production (editing, video and sound) to the performance, to the bonus interview and behind the scenes footage. And the song list was varied with several songs from "I'm With Stupid" and "Magnolia", as well as "Whatever" and the recent "Lost In Space".
Anyway, as you can tell, I highly recommend this DVD/CD.
