James Doohan reprises his "Scotty" role in this truly satisfying entry in the later Trek series. He provides a "bridge" between the old and the new as an "Old World" man transported to a time where he surely does not belong. The scene on the holodeck-simulated Enterprise is touching and beautifully acted by Doohan.
Special effects are found throughout, but they do not overshadow the on-screen actors. Of the cast, Levar Burton shines as Geordi who is in awe of "the engineer above all engineers."
A history meeting and an enjoyable hour.

Dan Fogelberg Live - Greetings from the West (1991)
Average Reviews:

As this video was unfortunately never sold in Europe, I had to go out and buy it in the original NTSC version in California during a summer vacation in 1995. Even though I had to get it copied to European PAL standard, it is a tape I treasure & never get tired of watching. Again, as DF has never made it across the ocean for a concert tour over here, the video is all have after 23 years of listening to the man's music to make up for never having been able to see him on stage. "Greetings From the West" is a wonderful 110 minute piece of concert footage, including some personal words from Dan and also a great selction of some of his best-loved tunes. It shows just what a great singer, musician & composer Dan Fogelberg is: tender ballads, energetic rockers and some very poetic lyrics - music that will never sound out of date. Excellent!

I still love Babyface. I have all of his cd's and I still listen to them all.
I don't normally like watching live performances on dvd (I'd rather be at the performance persoally), but this is great. Almost all of my favourites are here and he does some great duets. Breathe Again was performed with Shanice (who does a great job), Change The World with Eric Clapton and I Care About You (that was done by Milestone in Soul Food). Also here is Whip Appeal which is one of my all time favourite songs from him from Tender Lover cd.
This dvd is probably as close as I'll ever come to seeing this master in concert. I really enjoyed this and even though I've had it for years, I still watch it a couple of times a year and enjoy it each time as if it were the first time around.

The previous reviewer seems to have many problems, none of which were caused by repeated forced viewings of Wee Sings "Big Rock Candy Mountain". The fact that this person's friend wanted to watch it over and over again is proof that this is one very enjoyable and imaginative film My grandkids enjoy all the colorful characters and upbeat songs/dances. The 2 year old will ask for this movie by simply saying: "Foo Foo".

Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers: Three Nights on the Town (2005) Review

Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers: Three Nights on the Town (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Finally, a concert video that actually comes close to capturing the experience of a Bruce Hornsby concert!
Previous Hornsby videos have been OK for what they were - TV specials, staged concerts, stunt events full of "special guests." Hornsby's music and talent are too good to produce a bad show.
But this one, recorded at NYC's Town Hall during last year's Halcyon Days tour, is the real deal: Bruce and his band, the Noisemakers, in what feels like a complete show (it probably isn't, since they usually play longer than this, but since every Bruce show is different it doesn't matter that much; the editing is true-to-life, so it looks and feels like a real, complete show).
When you watch this band play you can see how closely attuned they are to each other, and how well they know Bruce's moves, and how well Bruce understands their capabilities. He can take off on an improvisation in the middle of a song and they know how and when to follow him (and when not to), and they can bring each other back to the song as if they're all mind readers. While there's a bit less adventuring in this show than usual, you can still feel that tightness, and the video captures it very well.
The video puts you right on stage, up close and personal, with cameras everywhere and plenty of face time for everyone. The editing is excellent, very sane, very attuned to the music, almost never getting in the way. The sound is equally good, a clean, clear concert mix that puts you in the front row without overwhelming you with audience ambience. DTS would have been nice, but the DD 5.1 is fine.
If you attended any of the band's concerts in the last year, this video will become a treasured souvinir. If you are a fan or Hornsby but haven't seen him live in a while, you will be amazed at how versatile and spontaneous, effortless and masterful his live performances have become. And if you're only casually familiar with Hornsby from his hits, you will be simply astonished by one of America's most talented musicians, performing here at the height of his powers, supported by a band that complements him in every respect.
I had high hopes for this disc since I first heard about its planned release, and for once my expectations have been exceeded.
Very highly recommended.

Dusty Springfield - Reflections Review

Dusty Springfield - Reflections
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's about time Dusty gets her due on DVD! What took so long? The delay was purely criminal. In any case, perhaps my anticipation and excitement at the first release of Dusty on DVD will cloud my judgement of this 1 hour program that includes full length performances of 17 of Dusty's TV appearances. However, BEWARE, only about 1/2 of the songs performed are performed LIVE, the other half (mostly those from a Dutch program recorded in the early 70s) are just Dusty lip-syching to her records.
Now, while it's fascinating to watch Dusty perform (especially in some of the weird settings and even weirder outfits/wigs the Diva dons), whether it be live or lip-synching, nothing compares to the real thing.
Part of the excitement in having this DVD is in hearing her live takes of such amazing hits as "Son of A Preacher Man", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "Losing You", "The Look of Love"(just 1 verse though) and many others.
However, there still are 2 absolutely brilliant, stand-out moments on this DVD. The first is the live version of "Since I Fell For You", which Dusty makes totally her own. (I totally forgot who sang it originally) The second is her even better live take on "People Get Ready". Such subtlety, such nuance, such sensitivity! I can't think of another singer who has taken a much overplayed and covered song and made it so fresh and new and yet so heartfelt. Dusty bares her soul completely, and this is what made her special.
The commentary between songs by Petula Clark and B.J. Thomas is nice, but nothing special. The interview clips with Dusty throughout the years are much more interesting, although the ones from the Dutch TV show are disturbing to watch, because she doesn't seem to be all there.
This DVD is a good start, but in no way does it represent the full majesty of Dusty's abilities with an audience and in a live setting. We have to wait (and hope) for the DVD release of her 1979 Royal Albert Hall concert to begin to feel the full effect of Dusty's magic. The next step would be to release all her BBC and ITV shows from the mid 60s.
Until then, this will have to do us. I give it 5 stars just because I'm glad it's out there.

Never 2 Big (1998) Review

Never 2 Big (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Never 2 Big or "Butter" as it is also known had a lot going for it. A strong cast great production values and an interesting premise. It had the potential to be a great movie about the dark side of the music business. The entire cast gives strong performances, Especially Ernie Hudson as the evil record mogul. I only wish Salli Richardson and Nia Long had gotten more screen time- both were excellent in their brief roles. Shemar Moore is quite good in his first feature film role about a record exec who gets mixed up in the shady dealings and is forced to go on the run after his sister is murdered and he's next to be targeted by the record mogul's hitmen well played by Tony Todd and Tiny "Zeus" Lister. With all these elements in place you'd expect this "Butter" to be sweet. Unfortunately this movie quickly turns to a big piece of government cheese. The film looks great; the cast and producers do their best, but they can't over come "Butter's" Margarine, Always 2 shallow, poorly written script which devolves into really bad a shoot em' up urban action movie. The story has entire chunks missing from it and these major details that the producers thought were minor would have helped flesh out the story better. Unfortunately, those portions of the film were left on the cutting room floor and the audience is supposed to assume certain things happened off screen while the hero moves on to the next scene. Big Mistake. Also, For a film about the music business, there wasn't very much music in this film. Strange. The story is a character driven one and with portions of it missing the whole film suffers. The character relationships to one another are not well defined-I wasn't really given a chance to get to know any of the characters or their motivations. In order for a character driven story to work, there must be character development so the audience can be shown what is going to happen and why it's going to happen. Without the explanation of the details, I was confused for most of the film. The way the film is edited it seems people do things get shot and die; the hero wins and the credits roll. I would have like to known why things were happening. Like the music business it's based on this movie looks flashy on the surface, but has nothing really interesting going on underneath it. I wanted to like this movie, but it doesn't feel complete. At the end of the movie Shemar Moore's character says "Butter, Baby" But the movie feels like Parkay.

Bursting onto the international scene in the early 90's, Britain's Lisa Stansfield is a certifiable diva in every sense of the word. Sensual, alluring, provocative, and featuring a set of pipes that others would die for, Stansfield also is a looker.
This compilation features some of her best work in two formats: the viewer can watch the videos down-to-earth insightful commentary from the singer or one can watch the videos only. The DVD extras are seven additional performances along with out-takes.
And one can't complain about the more-than-reasonable cost!
Clocking in at almost three hours viewing time, this is an ultimate videography of one of the world's most talented songstresses.

Star Trek: Next Generation, Episode 107 - Unification II (1987)
Average Reviews:

This Part 2 of "Unification" . Most Star Trek fans tend to like part 1 better but I honestly like this one much better because the Romulans are so much more interisting than the writters of the show give them credit for. They should have already been in one of the movies before the Borg and especially the easily fooled Klingons.
Anyway, this episode shifts from revolving around finding Spock to the politics of two nations: The Romulans and the Vulcans. Commander Sela makes a special guest appearance which was long over due .
Hopefully we will see her as this charactor again because this one has substance unlike the dull Tasha Yar charactor.
Overall a fabulous episode because you actually get to see a small peice of Romulus rather than the Klingon homeworld oe Earth. BUY THIS!

Monty Python's Flying Circus - Set 6 (Epi. 33-39) (1971) Review

Monty Python's Flying Circus - Set 6 (Epi. 33-39) (1971)
Average Reviews:

Monty Python is a sacred institution that needs to be treated respectfully. What a shame that A&E didn't see things that way.
There are many of us for whom these classic sketches are basically burned into our brains from having seen them countless times. This is because they stand up so well to repeated viewings. How, then, did A&E figure they could, so criminally, do the following, without some of us noticing:
- completely chop out the "Dad's Pooves" sketch
- completely chop out the "Choreographed Party Political Broadcast" sketch (right before the Book at Bedtime sketch at the start of the show)
- put in a horrific blip in the middle of "Biggles Dictates a Letter" in which a few seconds of dialogue are completely ruined
As has already been mentioned, the transfer is also poor in places. My efforts to point these matters out to A&E were shrugged off when I reported them, which leads me to believe there is no plan to fix these offensive errors. Buyers beware! At present it appears there is no way for the completionist to actually obtain the complete works of Monty Python in DVD format due to these omissions.

Live at Ground Zero Blues Club Review

Live at Ground Zero Blues Club
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you saw the "Road To Memphis" episode of the PBS "Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues" series you will most definitely remember the name Bobby Rush. His was the story of a guy who has been travelin' the "Chitlin' Circuit" of bars and blues clubs for many years. When this - his first ever - DVD was taped in 2003 at the Ground Zero Blues Club (co-owned by actor Morgan Freeman, who shows up in the last few minutes of the show) in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Rush was already past 65 years of age and had been performing for over 50 years! You'd never know he was that old when you watch is moves and watch him work the room. This guy is a Showman with a capital "S"!
The 74-minute show features Rush on vocals (except for one instrumental with Rush on harmonica) backed by a six-piece band. As is his trademark - which you'll remember from the PBS Blues show - he's also accompanied by four female "dancers" whose sole job is to shake their buns in a most rhythmic manner. Most songs actually give each woman a "buns solo"! The songs are of the "soul blues" variety and nearly all have a sexual connotation. But Rush does it with a sense of bawdy humor.
The camera work is top notch and the close-ups are sharp. The sound is fabulous too. Rush must rank up there with the late James Brown in the "hardest working man in show business" category.
There's an added bonus track with Rush performing solo on vocal and guitar. It's not up to the rest of the show.
If, like me, you wanted to see more of Bobby Rush ("Bobby Rush! Bobby Rush! Bobby Rush!" the announcer chants) after seeing the PBS show, this is a great place to do it. And be certain that you won't see this show on PBS!
Steve Ramm - "Anything Phonographic"

Bikini Beach (1964) Review

Bikini Beach (1964)
Average Reviews:

Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon are back for a second dose of beach frivolity in this sequel to the smash-hit BEACH PARTY, the aptly-titled BIKINI BEACH.
Dee Dee (Annette Funicello) and Frankie (Frankie Avalon) are about to settle into a romantic summer when the beach that they occupy comes under the scrutiny of a stuffy retirement-villa owner (Keenan Wynn). There is also the arrival of the new British pop-superstar Potato Bug (played as a cameo by Frankie Avalon), and the ever-annoying Eric Von Zipper (Harvey Lembeck) to contend with!
Soon, Dee Dee finds herself being romanced by both Frankie AND Potato Bug, while Von Zipper challenges Potato Bug to the drag race to end all drag races!
Featuring great guest appearances by Martha Hyer, Don Rickles and Boris Karloff in his walk-on bit as the art collector. There are also great musical numbers performed by Stevie Wonder (under his original name of "Little Stevie Wonder") and Donna Loren.
With Candy Johnson, John Ashley and Jody McCrea.
The DVD includes both full-frame and widescreen versions of the film, as well as the trailer. (Double-sided, single-layer disc).
