As a gentleman with a bit of grey in my hair, I've been privileged to have seen almost every major act that came down the road. I saw this concert at another stop on the tour, and I must say I was completely and breathlessly KNOCKED OUT by Shakira's performance, on every professional and ethereal level. The atmosphere in the arena was as highly charged as I've ever experienced, and her entrance as you'll witness on this disc was dramatic, mysterious, sensual and almost otherworldly. When those lights hit the snake and the opening chords of Ojos Asi were struck... and as she began to move... and as she seemed to float forward to the mike... I'll tell you, it was a life moment, I'll never forget it. It was genuinely surreal. What was SO incredible, however, was that by the time the song was about to end and we had seen her movement, heard her voice, and felt the powerful and exotic wall of sound reduce to a simple violin phrase, the crowd was almost silent, as though dumbstruck. Few entrances and opening numbers have ever left me speechless... but this did. As to the DVD, it's A+ in every regard except for being the single most poorly edited video I've ever sat through. A blind editor would have done a better job. Otherwise the show is great, sound is great, camerawork when left alone for more than one second is good (this speed freak MTV five shots a second nonsense must end!), this woman has perhaps the most beautiful face since Bardot and she moves like an opium dream. Buy it and see why Britney and Christina cut their tours short - they obviously watched this DVD!

The Taming of the Shrew (1976) Review

The Taming of the Shrew (1976)
Average Reviews:

In my almost complete collection of Shakespeare DVDs this is a unique pearl. I could not believe the other review at amazon.co.uk. After very long hesitation I purchased the region 2 encoded version with the unhelpful Netherland undertitling.
This was the effect:
On Wednesday I watched it alone, on Thursday with my friend, on the weekend with the whole family; and the next weekend with friends of the family. We had such a great fun, that for weeks we were quoting to each other from the movie!
Never before or afterwards did I see a record of this play performed in such a witty and screwball-comedy-like way - and still in a very understandable language.
If a fairy would grant me two wishes, I would have this play digitally remastered and other plays of the bard performed in this way too...

Wattstax (30th Anniversary Special Edition) (1973) Review

Wattstax (30th Anniversary Special Edition) (1973)
Average Reviews:

I first discovered the album during my early years as a '70s funk, soul and black music fanatic (in the early 80's) and dreamed of one day actually being able to see the move... For years and years I waited and prayed... probably figuring that something that good had long been lost and destroyed... and finally... ! ! ! - - Although in all honesty the two records actually have much more music than the film, the film is an amazing portrait of urban black life, music and culture in that era... The blacksploitation films presented a fantasy version of it... Wattstax took the cameras out in the community and showed people being for real and talking about... well, life in general. - - and the high point... YES, definitely RUFUS THOMAS's performance, and also Johnnie Taylor at that club that looked like a scene out of THE MAC or some Rudy Ray Moore Film... as well as the less than enthuisiastic response of the audience during the Star Spangled Banner... (Film also features an incredible version of LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING which I don't remember being on the soundtrack (?) - - a commemoration of the tragic WATTS riots and a celebration of how the community was coming to terms and rebuilding itself, in addition to the poignance and political message, and a young (just getting discovered) Richard Pryor's "social commentary"- - the film is also delightfully dated... trust me, you KNOW its the early '70s ! ! ! The only downside is that its over before you knew it...

Duke Robillard In Concert (1994) Review

Duke Robillard In Concert (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very high quality DVD concert, filmed in what looks like
a tv studio.
The German tv show is called OHNE FILTER-MUSIK PUR,and has been brodcast continiously since 1983,and has artists than can
actually play real music, unlike the chart music for kids today.
Artists that play blues, jazz, soul, funk are to be found, and
over 300 bands have performed on this show.
Duke Robillard is a genuine guitar player, and can switch
from blues to jazz to rock in a second.
His version of T Bone Walker's "Glamour Girl" is awesome, even
plays his guitar amazingly behind his head.
Other tracks are LOVE SLIPPED IN, NEVER LET YOU GO, RULE THE
WORLD, GEE I WISH (my favourite), SHE'S SWEET, LIFE'S FUNNY,
WHAT'S WRONG, I THINK YOU KNOW, TOO TIRED.
The concert is one hour long, with an interview with the producer of the tv show,a list of every artist to have appeared,
which includes THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS, JETHRO TULL, LOS LOBOS,
RORY GALLAGHER, EDGAR WINTER, SANTANA, to name but a few,and hope that all these artists are released on DVD soon.
If you love the R&B sound, without the frills of light shows,
and special effects,get this disc.
Sure hope someone can release a DVD concert of artists like
ANSON FUNDERBURGH, JIMMIE VAUGHAN, BOBBY RADCLIFF, real artists
who's sounds will live on forever.
Ray.

Great Opera Singers / Gundula Janowitz, Rita Streich, Tito Gobbi, Boris Christoff Review

Great Opera Singers / Gundula Janowitz, Rita Streich, Tito Gobbi, Boris Christoff
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is hard to imagine a better combination of performances. Some of the greatest singers of the 60's in sometimes grainy black and white, but all of them singing their hearts out. From the charm of Janowitz and Streich to the intensity of Gobbi and Christoff, this is an amazing program.
From ORTF and BBC sources, this DVD is an all around winner. Gobbi does wonderful things with the words and Christoff is gut wrenching in a staged version of the death Scene from BORIS GODUNOV.
The singing of Janowitz is beautifully poised, and Streich has near perfect coloratura tecnique and winning presence. (She also surprises with a fine lyrical performance of 'The Song To The Moon' from RUSALKA in the original Czech.)
The main program is truly wonderful, but the two bonuses almost upstage the rest of it. A sensational version of the great scene between Elsa and Ortrud from LOHENGRIN by a radiant Elisabeth Grummer and a suitably dramatic Isabel Strauss, followed by three intense scenes from PARSIFAL with Wolfgang Windgassen and Gottlob Frick.
The pictures may be grainy, but the mono sound is clear and excellent.

Mahalia Jackson - The Power and the Glory: The Life and Music of the World's Greatest Gospel Singer (2002) Review

Mahalia Jackson - The Power and the Glory: The Life and Music of the World's Greatest Gospel Singer (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is not the rather lame documentary that makes this item worthwhile but the bonus disc. It contains 2 hours with 38 live video clips recorded in black and white for American television in the late fifties. The performances are set against a sober kind of German expressionistic background. Most of the time the accompanying musicians (piano -must be Mildred Falls-, acoustic bass, electric guitar, drums and organ) are not in the picture. Without an audience the performances are rather serene but they are of high musical quality. Though some songs are more uplifting than others Jackson and the other musicians are in great form. They are randomly taken from the 80 video clip collection 'Mahalia Jackson sings' which lasts for 4 hours.
In regard of the documentary: it is apparent that there is not that much video footage left of Mahalia Jackson, except from the above mentioned footage. There is something to be said for the interview recordings used but for a visual documentary it is a pity that only two excerpts, lasting only seconds, are accompanied by moving pictures of Mahalia Jackson. This is the great omission of the film. To cover up for this problem a lot of irrelevant archive footage is used and the camera zooms in or out on tens of still photographs. Then there are a lot of chit chatting talking heads from people who where more or less close to her and on top of it all there's the annoying voiceover. Most troubling is that their voices are mixed through the soundtrack of the few interesting concert snippets, which are not fully shown in the first place. Most of the scarce concert footage is from one of her later and less impressive concert tours where her voice, music (without pianist Mildred Falls) and performance have lost power. This footage is earlier and to a greater extend used for Allen Miner's, mostly depressing, 86-minute tour report (released in 1974). On a slightly positive note: added up there are a few minutes of unique video material from earlier performances. The one-minute recording of 'How I got over' from the march on Washington is very impressive; she performs the song at the same lectern where Dr. M.L. King gives his famous speech. Unfortunately this recording is also interrupted by speech and visuals.
I have not much trust in hoping for a thorough documentary film on Mahalia Jackson's life and music. I do hope for complete video releases of the concerts, which are so barely touched upon in this documentary. For example nothing beats the overwhelming recording of a part of her concert at the Newport Jazz festival 1958, which was used for the impressive music documentary 'Jazz on a summer's day' (Bert Stern, USA 1960). And then there are the unpublished television specials she made for CBS in 1955 (not the same as the 'Mahalia Jackson sings' recordings), a bit of interesting audio material is used for this documentary.

And now...another tediously detailed summary of a Monty Python DVD Set from an individual who has too much time on his hands but is by no means as dull as a chartered accountant. Here are the breakdowns (including episode #s () and individual sketch names). Why? Well, because I'm a nerd.

Loony Bin extras: Meet the chaps, Pythonisms, Gillianimations, Silly Walk (Live!), Naughty bits, pythonshop.com ad
DVD 6 - (17) Architect sketch/how to give up being a mason/insurance sketch/"The BISHOP"/living room on pavement/poets/a choice of viewing/chemist sketch/police constable pan-am - (18) Live from the grill-o-mat/"BLACKMAIL"/society for putting things on top of other things/escape from film/current affairs/accidents/seven brides for seven brothers/the man who is alternately rude and polite/ken clean-air system - (19) It's a living/the time on BBC1/school prize giving/films by Mr. Dibley/the news/free prizes/Timmy williams interview/Raymond LUXURY YACHT/getting married/ELECTION night special
Loony bin: same as DVD 5 except for - A trivial quest, Gilliam's attic, Monty queries, and Tutor manners
That about sums it up. I know there are no episode titles and probably some other little things included but...well, too bad. If you like extremely geeky summaries like this or you are in fact a large geek, check out my "reviews" for DVD set 1 & 2!

Voices of Our Time - Barbara Bonney / Malcolm Martineau, Chatelet Opera Review

Voices of Our Time - Barbara Bonney / Malcolm Martineau, Chatelet Opera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Barbara Bonney, of the silvery voice heard in such roles as Sophie in 'Der Rosenkavalier,' turns out to be a marvelous recitalist as well. This disc of a live recital presented in the Théâtre Musical de Paris-Châtelet is part of a wonderful series: 'Voices of Our Time.' So far there have been DVDs of recitals by Sylvia McNair, Dawn Upshaw, Grace Bumbry, Thomas Hampson, Anne Sofie von Otter, Felicity Lott and Ian Bostridge, all recorded at the Châtelet. More to come, I hope.
This recital is unusual in a couple of respects. The first half of the concert is devoted to Schumann's 'Dichterliebe' and the second half to rarely-heard Scandinavian songs. What's so unusual about 'Dichterliebe,' you ask? Well, it's almost never done by a woman singer. Yes, Lotte Lehmann sang it, and Brigitte Fassbänder recorded it, but it's extremely rare nonetheless because Heinrich Heine's poetry is definitely written from a male perspective and as far as I know the cycle is published only in male voice versions. Still, there are some glorious songs in the set, and frankly who cares if it's a woman singing them? I don't. The first, 'Im wunderschönen Monat Mai' ('In the beautiful month of May') is certainly one of Schumann's most glorious melodies, and Bonney's sweet lyric soprano and her exquisite control make it almost unbearably beautiful. Yet, Bonney is able to sing the more dramatic 'Ich grolle nicht' ('I do not resent') with suitable intensity. This is a more-than-acceptable 'Dichterliebe' even if one can't quite get Fischer-Dieskau's or Fritz Wunderlich's voice out of their mind's ear. Malcolm Martineau handles Schumann's sometimes virtuosic piano accompaniments with panache and sensitivity; he and Bonney make a grand team.
For me it's the second half that is the more attractive because of its rarity, and its closeness to my heart. I have always been attracted to the song literature of Scandinavia, and am particularly fond of the songs of the too-poorly-known Swedish composer, Wilhelm Stenhammar, of which there are five here, interspersed among songs by Sibelius, Grieg, Hugo Alfvén and Carl Sjöberg. Bonney, who for a time was married to Swedish baritone Hakan Hagegard and who lived in Sweden for a number of years, has clear Swedish and Norwegian diction. I've never been terribly fond of Sibelius's 'Diamanten pa Marssnön' ('Diamonds in the March Snow') but it is gorgeously sung here. It is followed by one of my favorite songs, Stenhammar's 'Till en ros' ('To a Rose') and I will admit that Bonney's singing was so beautiful and emotionally true that by the time it was finished I was in tears. Much the same was true for the even more dramatically moving ballad, 'Flickan kom ifran sin älsklings möte' ('A Girl Came from Meeting Her Lover') with its dark and tragic dénouement. Songs I've rarely heard before and which I found quite beautiful were Alfvén's 'Sa tag mit hjerte' ('So Take My Heart') and Grieg's 'Med en vandlilje' ('With a Waterlily'). My heart gladdened with old friends like Grieg's 'Jeg elsker Dig' ('I Love You,' but perhaps better known in its German version, 'Ich liebe Dich') and the 'perfect song' (Bonney's appropriate description), Stenhammar's 'I skogen' ('In the Woods'). I'd never heard Sjögren's 'Tonerna' ('Music') except on an old Swedish recording by Jussi Björling and I must say it really ought to be in the core song repertoire; it is certainly as moving as Schubert's 'An die Musik' ('On Music').
For encores Bonney and Martineau give us Schumann's 'Der Nussbaum' ('The Nut Tree') and Alfvén's 'Skogen sover' ('The Woods Sleep'). And perhaps as a gift for the Parisian audience, one song in French, Liszt's 'Oh! Quand je dors' ('Oh, when I sleep') sung rapturously.
There are interspersed interview snippets with Bonney and Martineau, and there are subtitles available in English, French, Spanish and Italian. Sound is available in stereo, Dolby stereo and DTS 5.0.
A wonderful disc that I heartily recommend to lovers of great songs sung beautifully.
Scott Morrison

I was extremely fortunate to attended this outdoor concert as well as all of the Bachfest2000, and what a feast of music it was. This video captures the outdoor concert in the square wonderfully, including the periods of rain and the wonderfully attentive crowd, and the taped performances are of highest quality, although I agree with a prior reviewer that the Turtle Island group, while interesting, was a bit hard to take. Bobby McFerrin was terrific as usual, but then again so were everyone else. In addition, I particularly like the Quitessence Saxaphone Quintet and Jacques Louspier. (I was walking through the Market Square the day prior to the concert and heard several of the groups trying out their arrangements and the sound system. What fun Mcferrin and the saxphone group had then, just too bad that it, too, couldn't be on the DVD.) Hey, if you like Bach, or not so much, buy this it's great.

Kurt Carr and the Kurt Carr Singers: Awesome Wonder (2007) Review

Kurt Carr and the Kurt Carr Singers: Awesome Wonder (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I honestly never thought that there could ever be a way to top or even come close to the last album "No One Else", but this new album "Awesome Wonder" is running neck-in-neck. In the three year hiatus between albums the Kurt Carr singers have made a few minor cast changes. After the disbanding of Kesha Ealy, LA Mass Choir veteran, Nicole Potts ["Jesus Never Fails"] took her place and after the disbanding of Corey Briggs, New Jersey import, Troy Bright, a former CD Hawkins Singer, takes his place. Despite the cast changes, the sound remains the same.
Backed by West Angeles COGIC's Choir Of Life, the recording starts off with "In The Sanctuary", a rousing worship and praise song, which modulates into the heavens. Then there's the forceful yet fun praise song "We Declare War", led by Kurt Carr and Jackie Boyd-De Raat, after that is "O My Soul Loves Jesus" , a beautiful praise song led by Nicole Potts. Then there's the rousing "I Almost Let Go", led by Sherron Bennett along with Choir Of Life member Tisa Wills. Then there's the hot, salsa flavored "We Offer You Praise", led by Carr and the proclaimed "First Lady of Worship and Praise", Judy McAllister the song is played by Alberto Salas and his band. Then there's the down home Charles G. Hayes meets Kurt Carr flavored "Jesus Can Work It Out" with Shervonne Wells leading with spectacular ad-libs on the drive. After this is the "Worship Medley", beautifully led by Yvette Williams. Then there's something we wouldn't expect from Kurt Carr, an urban song. The title track. "Awesome Wonder" thought it has a worship and praise feel to it has a hot urban beat and edge mixed with the Kurt Carr singers vocals, the song is hot! After that is the beautiful "The Blood Still Has Miraculous Power", lead by Yvette Williams and then there's the sizzling hot jam "At All Times", lead by Jackie Boyd-De Raat and Nicole Potts. Then the most beautiful song on the entire album "That's Just The Way The Father Is", smoothly led by Kurt Carr's newest singer, native New Jersean, Troy Bright and to end the album the singers do exactly what the titles says, they "Set The Atmosphere" for a blessing from the Lord.
I was blessed by this album and I'm sure you will be to. This album is beautiful and indeed a must have!
